Bold to kick off postseason against Marauders this Wednesday

The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's basketball team will kick off their 2022-23 OUA postseason campaign against the McMaster Marauders this Wednesday.

This year marks the team's 14th consecutive year in the playoffs and yet only the second consecutive year for the program's young, and relatively fresh, roster.

In 2022, the Bold finished their shortened season with eight wins and six losses, placing fourth in the OUA East following a loss in the quarter-finals to the then-undefeated Carleton Ravens. Last year's stint saw a nearly brand new team searching for their identity throughout the season and learning how to connect on the court together.

This year, TMU has closed out the regular season with a 14-8 record, ranking third in the OUA Central division as a more mature, hungrier team. Just above them sit the Lakehead Thunderwolves, in second, and the first-place Brock Badgers — whom the Bold defeated in their last regular season game, just last weekend.

"I think we're one of the top teams right now," Rhooms said. "We proved it (against Brock) and we proved it before versus Carleton and others. I'm excited to see how far we can take it."

The Bold are a naturally offensive team, ranking fourth nation-wide in shooting percentage from the field (46.8) and fifth from the three (36.7) while the Marauders sit in 34th.

Defence, on the other hand, has long been the team's necessary area of improvement, an aspect of the game they've been focusing on over the past two seasons.

The team will need to continue to put their defensive work to practice on the court Wednesday night, as the fifth-in-the-division Marauders averaged more rebounds and steals throughout the season than the Bold.

TMU's turnover rate has also been a focus for the team this season, who allowed an average of 17.4 turnovers per game in the regular season. The Marauders, who average nine steals per game, will likely look to capitalize off the Bold's weak spot.

On the Marauders, TMU will want to look out especially for Mike Demagus, who puts up 16.8 points per game on average and tallied a team-high 34 steals in the regular season.

Wednesday's game will be played at home, at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, and tip-off is set for 8 p.m. EST. You can also tune in at OUA.tv.
