Frankie the Falcon

Who is Frankie the Falcon?

In Fall 2021, the Standing Strong Task Force presented the University’s Board of Governors  with a final report that included 22 recommendations to address Egerton Ryerson’s legacy. One of the recommendations put forward was to reconsider “Eggy” the mascot.

The process of deciding to retire Eggy and to identify a new university mascot and athletic team name included four community engagement periods and resulted in the decisions of the TMU Bold team name and our falcon mascot, Frankie B. Bold.

“It was clear from the feedback that our community wanted the TMU mascot to be an animal with local significance, with a level of sophistication and something that would connect to the team name,” said Jen McMillen, vice-provost, students. “Falcons are as bold as they come. They are fast and fierce, they are good critical thinkers, they are strong. These are all qualities that align with boldness, and represent many qualities of TMU student-athletes.”

In fact, the falcon was recommended nearly 40 times by community members, with one person saying, “a falcon represents keeping vigilant and transforming for the better which is what [TMU] aims to do. Transform for the better, this is why I think a falcon would be the perfect mascot.”

As Frankie B. Bold is in its infancy, our goal is to embody our university pride and create an inspirational icon to inspire students, faculty and community members alike. The values and goals of the university must be practiced and preserved within the Mascot Program as well, as Frankie is not only a character but a symbol of the TMU community.

How Mascots Help Build School Spirit

School Spirit may be defined as emotional support for one’s educational institution, manifesting itself through the instigation of school colours, cheers and community involvement. Toronto Metropolitan University encourages and celebrates school spirit throughout all aspects of campus life. Although intrinsically bound to every aspect of campus, school pride needs to be supported and fostered. What better way to build up school spirit than with a university mascot? With an emphasis on performance, personality and professionalism, Frankie exemplifies the true TMU spirit, reflecting the heart and passion of the student body.
