Invest in a TMU Bold Student-Athlete

Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Athletics and Recreation champions the development of the whole student through sporting excellence and active well-being. TMU Bold includes 180 student-athletes who represent the university on eight varsity teams: men’s and women’s hockey, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. As a diverse downtown campus, our athletics department is committed to providing a high-performance model that assists student-athletes in achieving their academic and personal potential.

Our student-athletes are leaders in giving back to the community and proudly represent the university.

TMU is recognized for its diverse student population:

  • 50% of undergraduates identify as racialized
  • 25% identify as first-generation university students
  • 8% 2SLGBTQ+
  • 7% identify as Black
  • 7% identify as living with a disability
  • 1% of students identify as Indigenous

The Cost to Play - Financial Realities for Student-Athletes

Our student-athletes lead demanding lives. They face the simultaneous pressures of playing varsity-level sports, focusing on academics, acting as leaders in their community, and keeping up with the general student experience. This is especially true for racialized student-athletes who face additional socioeconomic and systemic barriers.

The estimated average annual expense for an undergraduate student — taking into account tuition, books, accommodation, transportation and food — is approximately $40,000. And for a graduate or international student, these expenses are even higher.

Funding for scholarships allows promising young adults to dedicate their time and energy toward becoming the best students, athletes and citizens they can be.

Your support of athletic financial awards (AFA) will reduce the financial burdens faced by student-athletes and elevate their university experience. Each student-athlete can receive a maximum amount of $5,000 annually set by the Ontario University Athletics.

A gift of $25,000 over five years funds a financial award for the full term of eligibility for a varsity athlete. Your generosity will be setting an athlete up for long-term success by decreasing financial pressures and allowing them to focus on their sport, academics, and leadership opportunities.

We appreciate your contributions to helping us reach our goal of ensuring that every student-athlete in the TMU Bold community is supported financially.

Statement from Coach Carly Clarke, TMU women's basketball head coach:

“With an average of approximately 17 hours per week dedicated to training, in addition to being full-time students, the demands and expectations on student-athletes are very high. The ability to support their athletic pathway with an athletic financial award relieves some of the financial strain from attending university and, at times, relieves the need to navigate an additional part-time job on top of school and athletic schedules. A robust offering of AFAs allows TMU to attract and retain the top student-athletes from across the country and beyond.”
