Reading week challenge awaits Rams against Nipissing

TORONTO - Though their schedule has reached reading week, the Rams women's hockey team will be more than busy as they take on the Nipissing Lakers in a pair of games.

After being shutout to start 2022, head coach Lisa Haley said that the Rams had to focus on themselves last week. They did just that in a 6-2 win over York last Saturday, where five different Rams skaters scored on home ice.

"We have definitely felt a positive shift just in terms of our environment," said Haley. "We all know that the games are going to get tougher as we go along here."

The Nipissing matchup this week reflects that toughness as the Lakers sit second in the OUA East and house one of the best offensive lineups in the province.

Nipissing has dropped just three games on the season. However, their lone loss of the fall semester was a 4-1 effort from the Rams back in November. In 2022, the Lakers have already lost two games, against Toronto and Ontario Tech.

Avery Horlock found the scoresheet in the November win against Nipissing and opened the scoring last Saturday against York.

"We're gonna think ahead now," said Horlock. "Definitely trying to get a win on the road, especially on the day trip."

The Lakers are on top of the league in goals per game, averaging 3.2 so far. Senior forward Brianna Gaffney also sits atop the OUA in scoring, with 14 points in 10 games.

Meanwhile, the Rams quietly sit just behind Nipissing, averaging 3.14 goals per game.

Horlock mentioned how the team has grown closer as of late as they look to triumph in North Bay once again.

"We did a lot of team bonding that made everyone feel warm and fuzzy. We're all striving towards the same goal - we all want it badly."

While Haley echoed some of Horlock's sentiments, she's also focused on the team's playoff goal.

"I think everybody wants to get points (in) every single game, and hopefully finish in the top five. Our goal is to make the playoffs, and whoever we have to play really doesn't matter. It's a tough matchup anyway you go," said the coach.

Puck drop in North Bay is at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday before Nipissing visits Mattamy Home Ice at 4:00 p.m. Saturday.
