Box Score OTTAWA, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams were on the road Saturday night for the Wilson Cup quarter-final against the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Having beaten the Gee-Gees earlier in the year, the Rams were looking to do so again, but fell short from the get-go. The Rams ended their playoff chances and their season with a heartbreaking 75-54 loss.
Coming off a dominant win against the Guelph Gryphons in the opening playoff round, it seemed like the Rams would dominate once again. However, that was not the case. The Rams would win possession and charge quickly to the basket but would miss their jumper. The Gee-Gees would get on the board first as Marlon Kordostami made his jumper.
Tanor Ngom (Dakar, Senegal) would follow it up with a slam as both teams would continue trading buckets. The Gee-Gees would eventually go on a 12-0 run, completely shutting down the Rams' offence, leading them to an early 23-8 lead.
The Rams, who are not used to only scoring single digits in the first quarter, would see their problems continue in the second. The Gee-Gees started the quarter on an 8-0 run led by a Calvin Epistola jump shot. He would lead the Gee-Gees with 18 points, seven rebounds, and six assists on the night. The Rams would pick up the intensity in the second part of the quarter going first on a 10-5 run and then a 6-0 run to end the quarter.
Tevaun Kokko made a spectacular dive to keep the ball inbounds which led to a Ngom layup. Ngom would lead the team with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Both teams would shoot for 19 points in the second.
The Gee-Gees would once again shoot first in the third as none other than Epistola made another jumper. Later on,
Jayden Frederick (Scarborough, Ont.) would convert on a three-point play. He would have the first eight points of the third quarter for the Rams. He would end with 18 points and four rebounds. The Rams once again found themselves being shut down as the Gee-Gees did an excellent job of sticking close to the Rams' sharp shooters. The Rams would continue to trail 63-42 at the end of the third.
Both teams scored only 12 points in the fourth quarter, but the Gee-Gees' lead was just too great for the Rams to overcome. It did not help that the Rams turned the ball over 25 times and that the Gee-Gees were able to get 16 steals and out-rebound the Rams 42-37. The Rams' offence was also uncharacteristically low as they shot only 18 percent from beyond the arc, made 37 percent field goals, and 55 percent free throws, finishing with just 54 points.
With no players graduating this year, the Rams will look to get better and strengthen their team during the off season, hopefully coming back better than ever and ready to get back to the national championships.
