Rare Sunday afternoon affair starts Rams second semester

TORONTO - The Ryerson women's hockey team will have a chance to ease into their 2020 calendar schedule this week with just one game on tap against the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday afternoon.

After a month off, the squad will need to look especially sharp as the Warriors sit in third place with a 10-6-0 record. Ryerson has two games in hand over Waterloo and sport a 9-5-0 record themselves.

Home ice advantage has definitely been a factor for the Rams this year, going 5-1 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC). Besides one short trip over to Varsity Arena later in the month, the Rams spend the entire month of January in the confines of the MAC. Before the December break, Ryerson split a two-game road trip, including a 3-0 loss to the Warriors in Waterloo.

While special teams problems have plagued the Rams all season, with both power play and penalty kill percentages near the bottom of the OUA table, it will be especially crucial when taking on Waterloo. The Warriors' penalty kill is the best in the league, operating at a precise 95 percent efficiency. The Rams felt the pressure of Waterloo's penalty kill back in their November matchup, going 0-for-7 with the player-advantage.

The Warriors' power play is also the fifth best in the OUA, but the Rams' penalty killers were able to keep them off the board in their last meeting, forcing them to go 0-for-3.

Despite their special teams woes, Ryerson scores an OUA-best 3.14 goals per game. The key to their game will be staying at full strength, which may be difficult due to Waterloo's keen ability to draw penalties. The Warriors have had the most power play opportunities in the league, with 74 in their 16 games.

Ryerson and Waterloo's matchup is a rare Sunday afternoon game, with puck drop scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Mattamy Home Ice. Ryerson students can attend for free with their OneCard.

The game will be followed by the PWHPA Dream Gap Tour game featuring Team Spooner and Team Daoust. Puck drop for that game is set for 4:30 p.m. at the MAC. To purchase tickets for the PWHPA game, click here
