Rams drop game one of semifinal series to Gryphons

Box Score

GUELPH, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams women's hockey team fell 4-2 to the Guelph Gryphons in game one of the OUA semifinals Wednesday night.

Ryerson – after winning their opening round 2-1 over the Queen's Gaels – is once again the lower seed in this matchup and thus had to travel to Guelph for this opening game.

The Gryphons had the highest scoring offence in the OUA this season and that was on display Wednesday night as their four goals in game one was just one short of the five that Ryerson gave up in their opening series of the playoffs.

Guelph took the lead in the first period, but the Rams tied it midway through the second off of a Tori Butler slap shot from the point – her first as a Ram.

Just minutes later Ryerson took their first penalty of the game and it proved to be costly.

Ryerson's penalty kill unit has been great since day one of the season however the Guelph power play unit got the best of it in this one.

And although the Rams only took two penalties, Guelph converted on both opportunities. Once in the second – just two minutes after the Butler goal – and once in the third when they extended their 3-2 lead to a two-goal margin.

The Rams power play also had two chances in this game and they capitalized on one of those thanks to Lauren Nicholson.

Ryerson now finds themselves in the same spot as the first round, a must win game two at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Home ice has been kind to the Rams recently and they have won six of their last seven there.

A win in game two would force a do or die game three back in Guelph Sunday night.

Puck drop Friday night at the MAC will be 7:15 p.m.
