TORONTO – Coming off a 1-1 start to the season on the road, the Ryerson Rams women's hockey team makes their home debut this season with a pair of games this week on Mattamy Home Ice.
The Rams will first welcome their cross-town rivals in the Toronto Varsity Blues on Wednesday morning for an 11:00 a.m. puck drop on School Day. Ryerson will then turn their attention to Windsor who visit the MAC on Friday night.
Ryerson has high expectations this season and started the year on the right foot with a decisive 4-2 victory over Ontario Tech in Oshawa. The Rams allowed just 14 shots against and looked strong at both ends of the ice. The following night Ryerson could muster only 16 shots of their own and dropped a tight 2-1 decision at Queen's.
Areas the team will want to address after the first weekend are the special teams. Ryerson has yet to click on the powerplay, going 0-for-7 to start the year. At the other end, their penalty kill percentage is sitting at just 77.8% which will need to improve if they want to be successful.
The Rams' first opponent of the week will be a tough one, as the Varsity Blues enter the game as the No. 6 ranked team in the country and are off to a 2-0 start. In their two games, the Blues have scored six times and allowed just one, so they are clicking on both sides of the puck.
Toronto first year player Natasha Athanasakos should be a player to watch for Ryerson after netting three goals and an assist in her first two OUA games.
On Friday, Ryerson will host the Windsor Lancers, a team that won just one game in regulation last season and are off to an 0-2 start already this year. Windsor lost a tight 3-2 decision to Brock to open their season and then was shutout against York.
Ryerson's leading scorer through two games is
Ye Eun Park (Gangneung, Korea) with three assists, but she will be absent from the lineup this week as she heads to national team training camp in Korea.
The Rams have five different goal scorers already this season and will look for their balanced attack to carry them to victories this week.
Action begins Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. against Toronto, while the puck will drop at 7:15 p.m. on Friday night against Windsor. Both games are available on OUA.tv Â
