Bold look to finally break through first round of OUA playoffs against No. 8 Varsity Blues

TORONTO—For the third consecutive season, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's soccer team has advanced to the OUA playoffs.

Mirroring last year's finish, the Bold clinched the sixth seed in the OUA East with a 4-5-3 regular season record. Now, they have their sights set on a familiar goal: advancing beyond the first round.

Standing in their way are the defending OUA champions, the No. 8 nationally ranked University of Toronto (U of T) Varsity Blues. Setting the stage for an intense cross-city showdown, the Varsity Blues finished third in the OUA East this season with a 8-3-1 regular season record.

The two teams opened their 2026 campaigns against one another, with TMU falling 2-1 after U of T scored the game-winner in the final minute of regulation. This time around, the Bold will look to turn that narrow defeat into motivation as they enter a win-or-go-home matchup.

"Making it to this stage over the last two seasons was still something relatively new for a lot of us, but I think now we've reached a point where we know we belong here, and we want more," said Bold goalkeeper Elisa Paolucci. "We're not satisfied with just making the playoffs anymore. We want to take that next step and prove to ourselves what we're capable of."

This year's Bold roster has been bolstered by a squad of determined vets and bright new stars, each bringing something different to the pitch.

Natalie Moynihan has continued to anchor the team this season. Appearing in all 12 regular season matches and scoring three goals, the 2024 TMSU Female Rookie of the Year continues to show her dominance on the field.

As captain, Moynihan hopes to set the tone early and keep her teammates focused on the bigger picture.

"Getting our heads into the game right away will be the difference maker, our team knows what's at stake and we love to say 'today for you, tomorrow for me,'" said Moynihan. "Keeping these ideas fresh going into the game reminds us what we're doing it for."

Up front, fourth-year striker Becca Bartosh has made an immediate impact after transferring from NCAA Division I. In 10 appearances, Bartosh has found the back of the net three times, adding another key attacking threat to the Bold lineup.

Making her OUA playoff debut, Bartosh is focused on trusting her abilities.

"I try to keep it as simple as possible. I know what my job is and I know how to get it done," said Bartosh.

She is equally as confident in what TMU can accomplish as a team against the defending champions.

"I've seen the best in every player on this team and when we orchestrate our strengths together, it makes us an extremely challenging team to play against no matter who it is," said Bartosh.

Meanwhile, 2025 OUA East Rookie of the Year Taylor Fazzari brings energy and determination to the Bold attack. Although she has yet to score this season, the striker will look to make her mark when the stakes are the highest.

In the midfield, Mera Saleh has also served as a key capitalizer for the Bold, appearing in all 12 regular season matches and scoring twice. Building on a standout second season, the third year has continued to play an important role on the pitch.

While TMU will need to capitalize on its scoring opportunities, its defensive line is just as important against the aggressive Varsity Blues offensive attack.

Defender Reilly Flesher has been a key presence on the backline, while also contributing offensively with her second OUA goal this season.

Heading into this rematch, Flesher believes the team has learned from their last game against U of T.

"Since our season opener against U of T we've learned a lot and grown closer," said Flesher. "I think one of the biggest lessons from that game was the importance of constant communication as a back line from start to finish."

Veterans Anna Ciumaciova and Vanessa Pianta will also bring valuable postseason experience, having been part of the Bold's playoff runs over the past two seasons.

Newcomers Hannah Duncan and Gloria Lucas have also added further depth to the defensive unit. Duncan netted a goal against the Ravens this season, showing her duality on the pitch, while Lucas leads the team with two assists, highlighting her playmaking ability.

Behind the backline and at the foundation of the Bold's communication is goalkeeper Paolucci. Starting in all 12 regular season matches, the senior has recorded a 0.750 save percentage and will be crucial to containing the Varsity Blues.

With this being her final playoff run, this postseason carries added significance. Paolucci is determined to make the most of her remaining time with the TMU program.

"As a senior, I think you start to appreciate these moments a little differently because you realize how quickly your time with a group like this goes by," said Paolucci. "I've watched this team grow so much over the past four years, and there's nothing I'd love more than to see all the hard work, sacrifices, and belief we've put into this program pay off."

The Bold will hit the pitch in Toronto on Wednesday, Oct. 21, when they face U of T at Varsity Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

With their season on the line, TMU will look to turn this third consecutive playoff appearance into something more.
