SUDBURY, Ont. — Against a backdrop of colourful October foliage, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 1-0 in an important matchup for playoff contention.
In their last meeting, the Bold faced the Voyageurs at Downsview, where the game ended in a 1-1 tie. This time, TMU looked for a win at Laurentian Field to collect much-needed points as the regular season nears its end.
The first half saw the Bold working to find their rhythm. After the opening 10 minutes, TMU got its first promising look when
Natalie Moynihan took a dangerous free kick just outside the box. Her strike made it through the defensive wall before being caught by Laurentian goalkeeper Noémie Bouchard.
Building off the momentum, Laurentian quickly raced down the pitch on a counterattack that ended with a shot sailing high over the crossbar.
Although the Bold took some time to settle into the game and connect their passes, they continued to challenge Bouchard multiple times throughout the opening half.
Isabella Langeli fired a strong shot and
Taylor Fazzari sent a dangerous ball from the left side toward the net, only to both be met with a glove save. Shots from
Becca Bartosh,
Alexandra Tanzola and
Vanessa Pianta also forced solid saves from Bouchard.
The Bold held strong defensively, refusing to let the Voyageurs build off their early counterattack or gain momentum.
Despite recording six shots on goal in the opening half, TMU went into the intermission tied 0-0 with Laurentian.
The Bold opened the second half looking to push the pace and secure all three points. TMU continued to apply offensive pressure while limiting Laurentian's opportunities to threaten the net.
In the 73rd minute, Moynihan stepped up for a free kick and with incredible precision, sent the ball up and over the Laurentian defence. The strike sailed just beyond Bouchard's outstretched hands and nestled into the right corner of the net, putting the Bold ahead 1-0.
The Voyageurs pushed to even the score, but the Bold held strong defensively to secure the victory.
Up next, the Bold will play their final game of the regular season in North Bay against the Nipissing Lakers on Sunday, Oct. 18, at noon. Fans can catch the action on OUA.tv.
