Bold drop OUA quarterfinal to Varsity Blues

TORONTO— With the Toronto skyline in the background, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's soccer team fell 5-0 against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (U of T) in the first round of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) soccer playoffs on Wednesday.

The Bold came into the game as the sixth seed in the OUA East, where they finished with a 4-5-3 record. Respectively, the defending OUA champions Varsity Blues were the higher third seed with an 8-3-1 finish on the season and held home-field advantage. However, the matchup going into the game was closer than the standings would indicate. During their Aug. 29 meeting, the Bold lost 2-1 to the Varsity Blues, with the latter scoring a game-winning goal in added minutes. The year prior, the Bold took the win 2-1.

The first half kicked off with an immediate boot down the line from captain Natalie Moynihan and a U of T counterattack had goalkeeper Elisa Paolucci moving early. Both teams settled into the match, a battleground brewing.

The Varsity Blues struck first with a cross into the 18-yard box where Mikaela Milczarek settled a rebound and took a shot, beating Paolucci into the right corner of the net.

TMU regrouped immediately. In the 11th minute, U of T had a cross opportunity where Paolucci was able to get an initial punch and the defence rallied behind her to keep the ball away from the net. Minutes later, Gloria Lucas came in on the right wing for an opportunity but was blocked by a Varsity Blues defender. Second-year Taylor Fazzari was able to force a foul, giving them a break for a free kick just outside of the Varsity Blues box. Moynihan took the kick, looping it into the box but was unable to connect with a TMU body. Halfway through the first, the Bold were threatened with another corner, yet Paolucci commanded her box to clear it.

Despite conceding an early goal, the Bold found their groove, leading to runs in the Varsity Blue's territory. Fazzari, who notched her second career playoff appearance, made multiple aggressive plays, fighting her opponents off the ball with her body.

The energy was buzzing on the field as TMU fought for an opportunity. Moynihan was fouled in the 29th minute, giving the Bold another free kick just past the half, where she connected with Fazzari's head but it was saved by Varsity Blues keeper Maria Godoy-Atrash. Soon after, TMU survived another U of T threat as a rebound sailed over the crossbar out of play. The Bold defence fought hard to keep their team in the game. Fourth-year Vanessa Pianta made her mark on the half, blocking two shots from making it into the Bold's box, Amanda Rankin kept away a cross and Reilly Flesher denied a U of T ball off her back. In the 40th minute, Paolucci found herself in a one-on-one against U of T midfielder Emilija Lucic, where she prevailed, denying the Varsity Blues of a prime scoring chance.

After an action-packed first half, the score stood at 1-0 in favour of U of T. The Bold left the field itching to take the next 45 minutes to turn the tide in their favour.

TMU started the second half pressing into their opponents' half. However, U of T raised the score to 2-0 in the 51st after a dominant strike into the top right corner by midfielder Beatrice Audain. The Bold saw more action in their half of the field and were able to hold the challenges off until a U of T corner kick saw Audain get a near-post shot off, which unfortunately deflected off of defender Hannah Duncan. The Varsity Blues now held a 3-0 lead over the Bold. The momentum in the half had clearly shifted in the Varsity Blues' favour. Shortly after the third, Ines Delhomelle scored the fourth goal of the night, beating a Paolucci dive.

Regardless of the score, there were still 25 minutes for the Bold to close the gap. The midfield and forwards pushed up the field to create chances.

The latter half was heated as Pianta fought for a header and U of T was awarded a yellow card after a jersey tug on Becca Bartosh. In the 87th minute, U of T added one final goal.

The Bold continued to fight tooth and nail to keep their season alive, but ultimately they were unable to turn the scoreboard in their favour.

The loss marks the official end of the Bold's 2026 campaign. Although not the outcome they hoped for, this season remains one they could be proud of, as this season marked their third straight appearance in the playoffs and a strong returning lineup marks a bright future for the team.
