TORONTO – The TMU Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce the appointment of
Sophia Li as the new Head Coach of the TMU Bold Golf team.
A PGA of Canada Class "A" Professional, Li brings extensive coaching, leadership, and athlete development experience to the program. Prior to her appointment as Head Coach, she served as an Assistant Coach with the TMU Bold Golf Team, supporting student-athletes in player development, competition preparation, and performance planning.
"I am honoured to lead the TMU Bold Golf team," said Li. "My goal is to create an environment where student-athletes can challenge themselves, grow as competitors, and develop the confidence, discipline, and leadership skills that will benefit them long after graduation."
Li is the Founder and Head Coach of So Golf Academy, where she has helped develop thousands of golfers ranging from beginners to competitive junior athletes. Since establishing the academy in 2018, she has grown the organization into a multi-coach program recognized for its commitment to player development and coaching excellence. Her coaching philosophy emphasizes individualized development, recognizing that every athlete possesses unique strengths, learning styles, and performance goals.
She holds advanced coaching credentials, including TPI Level 3 certification and the PGA of Canada Golf Operations Specialization. Li was also selected to participate in the Golf Canada and PGA of Canada "Women in Coaching" Program, an initiative designed to support and advance high-performance women coaches across Canada. Her athlete-centred approach combines technical instruction, performance technology, fitness, and mental skills training to support long-term development.
Beyond coaching, Li is actively involved in advancing the game of golf across Canada. She serves as President of the Canada International Golf Association (CIGA) and is a member of the PGA of Ontario Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group. In recognition of her contributions to coaching and player development, she received the PGA of Ontario Junior Leader of the Year Award and Professional Development Award in 2024. Li was also ranked first overall in the PGA of Ontario Professional Recognition Program in 2025.
As Head Coach, Li is committed to fostering a positive, inclusive, and high-performance environment where student-athletes can excel both academically and athletically.
"I look forward to building on the program's strong foundation and supporting our student-athletes as they pursue excellence both on and off the golf course," said Li.
Coach Li will be joined by assistant coaches
Melany Chong and
Matthew McRae, who will remain with the team to provide valuable continuity and experience to the coaching staff.
