The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold golf team wrapped up their 2023 season earlier today, placing 14th overall in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championship and shooting a combined +64 score over 36 holes at Grey Silo Golf Club.
On the men's side, Matthew McRae, Adam Nunez, Jeevan Bhardwaj, Nate Adams, and Rory Yantha teed it off for the Bold this weekend, while rookie swinger Abigail Dove represented the female side of the program to round out the field for TMU.
McRae fired the lowest round on the Bold's male side during Saturday's action (74) and wound up sitting just outside the top 20 heading into Sunday morning. The fourth-year would go on to finish the tournament with the Bold's top score, shooting a combined score of 154 through 36 holes to end off his 2023 season tied for 44th on the leaderboards.
Starting his Sunday round on the ninth hole, McRae quickly found his groove with the long irons and began approaching his hole locations in a hurry. The veteran proceeded to log just a lonesome birdie on his scorecard, lipping out on a long-ranged attempt at 17 to mitigate any late life from the fourth-year.
Nunez - who finished the weekend tied for 60th place and with TMU's second-lowest score - began his final round on Sunday with an improbable pair of pars on holes 10 and 11.
An eager approach shot from the first cut of the 10th fairway nestled within twenty feet of the pin and was promptly finished on Nunez's following putt.
First-year Rory Yantha struggled with the driver through his opening holes but managed to steady the ship during the most challenging stretch on the golf course.
The first half-dozen holes at Grey Silo had been circled on the scorecards of coaches and players for weeks leading up to the two-day tournament and saw its presence felt by all the players throughout the field over the weekend.
Despite taking a sizable bite into the scorecards of the players - holes three and six shared the highest scoring averages on the property - Yantha powered his way through the rigorous test by rolling four consecutive par putts and just a single bogey between holes two and six.
Playing alongside Yantha, Bhardwaj found similar success to his teammate later on in his Sunday round, surrendering just one bogey between holes seven and 12.
Adams - who competed in his first-ever championship tournament over the weekend - had a difficult time placing his long-range shots within striking distance of the pin on Sunday.
After finishing his opening round on Saturday with a score of 78, Adams went on to shoot nearly ten strokes higher in round two - a day that featured four bogeys and five doubles on the rookie's scorecard.
Starting her Sunday on the back nine, Dove wrapped up her playoff debut in a three-way tie for twentieth place thanks to a pair of late birdies on holes 15 and 17, as well as a string of pars through holes seven, eight, and nine.
"It was definitely good momentum to have back-to-back pars," said Dove following Sunday's final round in Waterloo. The rookie posted an opening-round 86 on Saturday while battling wet and windy conditions in her first-ever trip to Grey Silo.
The Bold wrapped up their final Sunday of the 2023 season in just over six hours and witnessed three of its players place above 60th place on the leaderboards (McRae, Nunez & Dove).
The season will not end just yet for Dove, however, as she became the first-ever rookie - male or female - at TMU to punch their ticket to nationals with a win at the Guelph Invitational in September.
"To say I am the first rookie to qualify for nationals is something I'm so proud of and happy to say. It's got a nice ring to it," mentioned Dove after securing a spot in the national championship.
Dove finished her weekend with a final-round score of 74 at Guelph Lakes Golf & Country Club, placing her in a tie with University of Waterloo's Hana Yoshida atop the leaderboards.
The first-year will represent the Bold on the national stage in June of 2024 during the Canadian University / College Championship presented by BDO.
The tournament will kick off on June 3rd at Idylwylde Golf & Country Club in Sudbury, Ontario.
