Bold claim victory over Voyageurs on Shoot for the Cure night

TORONTO - The TMU Bold women's basketball team picked up their second win of the weekend on Saturday night, edging out the Laurentian Voyageurs 71-63 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

This game marked the annual Shoot for the Cure game for the Bold. A pink-accented basketball was used during the game.

"I think [the pink ball] has been a tradition across U SPORTS. We've had this tradition going for a while," said lead assistant coach Shae Dheensaw. "That's what the pink game is, just to bring awareness to something that's bigger than basketball and raise money for the cause," she added.

Before tip-off, both teams took a knee during the national anthem, something that the Bold have done for previous games during Black History Month.

"We're planning to continue [kneeling] the whole month just to acknowledge the month and support the Black community," said first-year Hailey Franco-DeRyck.

The Voyageurs opened up the scoring for the game, but Franco-DeRyck wasn't far behind, opening the score for the Bold. She ended up with a non-conventional double-double with 15 rebounds and 11 assists to support her team.

"I was just trying to make it easier for whoever was guarding [Emilie Lafond] to make sure she didn't have any jump offs," added Franco-DeRyck.

A steal from Jayme Foreman pushing for a Bold turnover put the ball in the hand of senior Kallie Hall, landing a shot.

The Bold flew past the Voyageurs with a 3-point shot from Catrina Garvey, forcing the Voyageurs into a time-out.

The Bold claimed the lead at the end of the first quarter, 21-16.

The Voyageurs were hungry for the ball early on in the second, taking the Bold by surprise. The Voyageurs found their footing in Toronto and put up back-to-back points.

A back-and-forth quarter progressed as the Voyageurs continued to put up points. By the end of the first half, the Bold trailed behind the Voyageurs by one point, in a 35-34 game.

"I think we were resilient and persevering. [Laurentian] was just as much and it was toe to toe. I think we stayed collected. We stayed together, we didn't fall apart," added Dheensaw.

The turnovers weren't over as the teams went into the third quarter of the game. The visitors gave the home team a tough fight and they still had more in them.

The Bold forced a turnover halfway through the quarter after the Voyageurs weren't quick enough with the ball committing a shot clock violation.

The high-energy crowd at the MAC was emitting that onto the court and the players could feel the support.

Left handed shooter, Alex Pino, took to the line for two free throws. She added one-point to the overall score, giving the Bold an eight-point lead. The third quarter ended in a 55-50 score, bringing the Bold one step closer to a double victory weekend.

An aggressive final quarter was underway. As the Voyageurs inched closer, the Bold had great communication to try and steer as far from the visitors as possible.

The air was tight in the MAC with the Voyageurs trailing behind by three points. Foreman knew what she had to do, putting up a three-pointer before the visitors took a time-out.

With under 40 seconds left on the clock, the MAC erupted in cheers as the Voyageurs earned a team foul. Ball possession was given to the Bold's Haley Fedick who, alongside her teammates, was able to help finish off the game on a high for the Bold.

The blue and gold won the game 71-63, securing another win.

"I'm super proud of our resilience, I think that's grown a lot and our composure in those tense moments," said Hall. "My teammates are a huge part in everything we do here and I think that showed tonight," she added.

The Bold head to the nation's capital next Friday to take on the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
