The newest women's volleyball recruit sits at a table to sign her commitment documents.

Ottawa native Darcie Buchanan joins women's volleyball

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's volleyball team is pleased to welcome Darcie Buchanan as their third commitment for the 2023-24 season. 

Hailing from Ottawa, Ont., Buchanan is a versatile player comfortable playing from both the left and right side of the court.

Buchanan has been playing club volleyball with the Mavericks program in the nation's capital since 2018 and finished fifth in the country in 2022. She's also represented Team Ontario in 2021 and 2022 on the court as well as on the beach circuit last year. With Team Ontario beach, Buchanan achieved a fifth place finish at nationals, something she notes as the highlight of her career thus far.

An honour roll student for four years at Glebe C.I., Buchanan will be entering the International Economics and Finance program at TMU this fall.

"I was drawn to TMU for multiple reasons, including: the amazing downtown Toronto location, [the] established international finance and economics program, experienced coaching staff, and supportive team environment," exclaimed Buchanan. "I was also impressed by the tour of the school...in particular the study halls and workout facilities."

The newest addition to the Bold has recently taken up coaching, working as an assistant coach in the Mavericks club system, and is also a former downhill ski racer who loves to spend their extra time on the mountain.

"I consider myself to be a team-oriented athlete and I pride myself on my defensive speed, offensive intelligence, and versatility as an athlete capable of multiple positions," added Buchanan.

"Coming from Maverick Volleyball Club in Ottawa, Darcie is very familiar with high performance training and competition and will be able to contribute to our environment right away," said Bold assistant coach, Brett Hagarty. "She is a versatile player able to contribute to our team both on the left and the right giving us some options and flexibility."
