Papadopoulos wins bronze at wrestling nationals

EDMONTON, Alta. - First-year wrestler Dechlan Papadopoulos earned the first medal on the national stage for the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold wrestling program this weekend.

Papadopoulos won the bronze medal in the 57kg weight class at this year's U SPORTS championship, winning by fall just past the midway point of the first period. The win was extra special as the victory came over fellow OUA wrestler, Francesco Fortino from McMaster, who had won the silver medal at the provincial championship where Papadopoulos settled for bronze.

Papadopoulos lost his first round robin bout to eventual champion Treye Trotman from Western, but went on to defeat his next two opponents from Guelph and Calgary by 11-1 and 11-0 scores, respectively, to earn his place in the bronze medal match.

TMU's Arjun Cheema, a silver medalist at the provincial championship earlier this month, competed in the 90kg weight class and finished in sixth place.

Between the two wrestlers the Bold accumulated 10 points in the team standings to finish in tenth place.
