TORONTO — While basketball fans worldwide are enjoying the complete and utter chaos of March Madness, hockey fans in Ontario have been treated to an equally frenzied tournament in the form of the OUA Queen's Cup playoffs. The Rams men's hockey team embodies that craziness better than any other club competing for the championship; they won both their first- and second-round matchups in overtime after overcoming multi-goal deficits and, in truly heroic fashion, treated their hometown fans to games that'll live on in their hearts forever.Â
On Wednesday at 6 p.m., the Rams will continue their pursuit of a provincial championship by taking on the pesky Brock Badgers in the OUA semifinals at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. With a win, the Rams will punch their ticket to the Queen's Cup finals and, by extension, a berth in the U SPORTS National Championships in Wolfville, N.S.Â
With a loss, the Rams will move to play in the OUA's bronze medal game, a win in which also guarantees them a spot in the national tournament. Regardless of the result of Wednesday's game, the Rams will play at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Â
As always, the Rams faithful should keep an eye on the line of Kyle Bollers, Chris Playfair, and Kevin Gursoy, who combined to score three goals in Saturday's thrilling victory against the Waterloo Warriors. Elsewhere, Joe Rupoli and Elijah Roberts have been excellent over the past week, so too has goaltender Garrett Forrest, who kept exceptionally calm on Saturday during a wild stretch of hockey. Fans should also look for Ryan Wells and David Miller to make an impact, both of whom have been quietly effective over the past few weeks.Â
On Brock's end, forwards Jared Marino (9 G, 7 A combined during the regular season and playoffs), Owen Guy (7 G, 7 A), and Christian Girhiny (6 G, 13 A) are poised to be factors in the Badgers' attack, while defensive anchors Cole Thiessen (3 G, 9 A) and Christian DeDonato (5 A) will try to neutralize the Rams' group of potent forwards.Â
Historically speaking, the Rams own a 15-11 record against the Badgers, with two of those wins coming this season. Since the 2012-13 season, the Rams are 7-6 against the Badgers on home ice. This, notably, is the first time the Rams have advanced to the OUA semifinals since 1962.
