Bold Advance to OUA West Semifinals With Game 3 Win Over Brock

TORONTO—The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team defeated the Brock Badgers 2-1 in the decisive Game three of the OUA West best-of-three quarterfinal series.

After a tough loss the night before, the Bold returned to the ice with their season on the line and responded. Carrying a one-goal advantage for much of the night, TMU held firm to secure a spot in the OUA West semifinals.

The opening period was played at a high intensity by both sides. While the pace was fast, the game remained tightly controlled. Through the first six minutes, TMU registered the only shot on goal, setting the tone for a close, defensive battle.

A penalty to Ryan Cooper sent the Bold to the penalty kill, allowing Brock to build momentum. The Badgers generated a few shots, but goaltender Kai Edmonds stood tall, turning them aside with confidence.

TMU's first real scoring chance came on a rush up the middle. Mitch Lafay — playing in his first game of the new year — sent a backhand pass to Aleks Dimovski, who moved the puck to Jaden Raad for a one-timer that rang off the crossbar.

Another strong look followed from Will Portokalis, who fired a shot from the low slot that deflected off the glove of Brock goaltender Ben Bonisteel.

In the final minute of the period, TMU was rewarded with a power play after Brock's Tai York was called for tripping. Off the faceoff, Joseph Ianniello stepped into a clean shot that beat Bonisteel, giving the Bold the game's opening goal.

The period ended with TMU ahead 1-0 and holding an 8-7 edge in shots.

The Badgers pushed back in the second period, keeping the Bold pinned in their defensive zone for extended stretches and firing an onslaught of shots. Edmonds absorbed the pressure, and a clean glove save helped kill the Badgers momentum allowing  TMU to regain some rhythm, highlighted by a quality chance from Cooper.

A scramble in front of the Bold net led to an initial goal call that was overturned, resulting instead in a penalty shot for Brock. Edmonds shut the door once again, preserving the lead.

Edmonds finished the night with 31 saves.

"Brock gave us everything and more, and they played an outstanding game and they may have deserved a better fate," said head coach Johnny Duco. "But we don't have to apologize for having elite goaltending."

Late in the period, the Bold returned to the penalty kill. A sharp save from Edmonds, followed by a breakaway chance from Spencer Shugrue, halted Brock's push for an equalizer.

"That's one thing that we preach every day in practice, that defence comes first and that's what it's going to come down to in the playoffs," said Ianniello. "Credit to those guys, we have a bunch of guys that lay the body on the line every single night. And you know what? They come in every day and they do it, no matter if they're banged up. Those guys are always willing to put anything on the line."

The third period brought a noticeable shift in energy, with fans on edge as the one-goal game tightened. Brock continued to outshoot TMU, holding a 25-16 advantage at one point, forcing the Bold onto the defense. Players like Shugrue stepped up, blocking shots and disrupting high-traffic lanes.

At the 10-minute mark, TMU found breathing room. Jaden Raad scored his first goal of the season after taking a cross-ice pass from Liam Ross and snapping a quick shot past Bonisteel to make it 2-0.

"I had a quick look and I saw my D partner," said Raad about the goal. "He knew he was going to tap it to me, I saw a guy in front and just tried to get it around him and then found the back of the net."

Two minutes later, Brock responded during 4-on-4 play, cutting the deficit to one.

In the final minutes, Brock pulled its goalie in a last attempt to tie the game. Edmonds made a series of acrobatic saves, while Ian Martin laid out in front of a slapshot to help seal the win.

"We did a pretty good job of just holding them to the outside and trying to limit them to perimeter shots and get some early box outs, trying to make my life easy," said Edmonds about the Bold's defense. "I thought they did a great job."

The Bold closed out the 2-1 victory, despite being outshot 32-20.

TMU now advances to the OUA West semifinals, where they will face the Windsor Lancers in a best-of-three series.

"We understand it's going to be a tough task," said Duco about facing Windsor.  "We're looking forward to it. There's no easy games this time of the year, so that's one thing you understand, is that it's going to be tough. It's going to be hard. We're going to have to come together, we're going to have to have everyone play at the absolute top of their game to give ourselves a chance. If we do that, I like our chances."

Dates and times of the semifinal series are to be announced. Students can attend home games for free with their OneCard, while away games will be available to watch on OUA.tv.
