WINDSOR, Ont. — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team's pursuit of the Queen's Cup final came to an end after falling 3-1 to the Windsor Lancers in game 2 of the OUA West semifinal at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex on Saturday, Mar. 5.
Tonight's matchup was do-or-die for the Bold after a tough double-overtime loss to the Lancers on Thursday. With both teams evenly matched in speed and intensity, the series proved to be a tight one.
The physicality was evident from the opening puck drop, with big hits on both ends of the ice. Similar to game 1, play went back and forth early, with several dump-and-chase sequences resulting in early icing calls as both teams tried to establish control.Â
Six minutes in, the Bold went on their first penalty kill of the night. The sequence featured several clears and even a breakout into the Windsor zone, led by
Connor Bowie, who generated one of the first quality scoring chances of the evening.
Bowie has been a standout in the postseason, recording five points in the last four playoff games with three goals and two assists.
The Bold continued to apply offensive pressure but found themselves back on the penalty kill six minutes later. Goaltender
Kai Edmonds stood tall, making several key saves to keep the Lancers off the board.
With less than two minutes remaining in the period,
Brock McLeod fired a strong shot toward the net that was deflected by Windsor goaltender Max Donoso. Moments later, McLeod broke through and scored the opening goal.
Aleks Dimovski sent the puck toward the net, where McLeod redirected it past Donoso.
The first period ended with the Bold leading 1-0 and holding a 10-7 advantage in shots.
The second period carried a similar tone to the first, with both teams continuing to battle in what remained an evenly matched game despite TMU holding the lead. Quite a bit of play stayed in the neutral zone, leading to multiple turnovers.
With everything on the line, Bowie and McLeod were relentless on the puck as the Bold pushed to extend their lead.
One strong sequence came when Gavin Grudner collected the puck and skated through the neutral zone before passing to
Daniil Grigorev. Grigorev entered the offensive zone and fired a clean shot at Donoso. The puck bounced out of Donoso's glove, giving Grudner a chance at the rebound, but the Bold were unable to convert.
The Lancers nearly tied the game on a chance that had the Windsor crowd celebrating briefly, but Edmonds made an impressive save through heavy traffic in front of the net, and officials waved off the goal.
In the final four minutes of the period, Windsor took control by scoring twice to move ahead.
The middle frame ended with the Bold trailing 2-1, with Windsor outshooting TMU 15-9 in the period.
The final period featured several scoring opportunities for the Bold, but Windsor added another goal within the first four minutes, widening the gap.
Despite the push from TMU — including a sharp shot from
Chase Lefebvre and a low-slot attempt from
Ian Martin — the Bold were unable to find the equalizer.
The game ended in a 3-1 loss for the Bold, with the Lancers edging TMU in shots 29-28.
Up next, the Bold will play for bronze against the team that loses Game 3 in the Queen's and UQTR OUA East semifinal series.Â
