Rams host Ravens in OUA semifinal on Wednesday

TORONTO - The Rams women's basketball team will be hosting the Carleton Ravens in the OUA Critelli Cup semifinal this Wednesday, March 23.

With the game taking place at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, this will be the first time these teams matchup this season, with their two scheduled regular season games being cancelled in February.

Both teams are fresh off quarter-final wins this past Saturday, when the Rams defeated the Queen's Gaels while the Ravens were victorious against their rivals in the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

The Ravens came out on top with a tight 61-58 win thanks to a fourth quarter comeback and two late threes with forward Emma Kiesekamp and guard Tatyanna Burke sharing a team-high of 11 points.

Carleton is a team similar to the Gaels in the sense that they have little weaknesses to exploit and have a strong overall team in most statistical categories. Notably, the Ravens are second in the OUA in total rebounds per game, and first in offensive rebounds. Against Ottawa, the black and white out-rebounded the Gee-Gees 41-25, creating an abundance of extra possessions.

With the Rams being the league-leaders in steals, they will surely be challenged as the Ravens also have a league-best turnover margin.

What the Rams might look to profit off of is Carleton's lack of three point shooting, as the Ravens are an OUA-ninth in three pointers made per game, in contrast with the Rams being the best three point shooting team in the league. The Rams also own the best defence in the league, including their perimeter defence.

On Saturday against the Gaels, the Rams once again showcased their lockdown defence forcing 26 turnovers and only allowing 58 points.

On offence it was forwards Jama Bin-Edward that led the Rams with 22 points, Rachel Farwell added 13 points with three three-pointers made and centre Eleanor Jones contributed 12 points in just 19 minutes.

Despite the Ravens going 10-4 in the regular season, dropping games to York, Laurentian, Ottawa and Queen's, it is likely that Carleton will be the biggest test of the season for the Rams, as the Ravens look to be playing strong postseason basketball.

Wednesday's game will determine who advances to the Critelli Cup championship game as well as who will earn a berth to the Final 8 national championship.
Tip-off at the Mattamy Athletic Centre is set for 6 p.m. Tickets are available online with Ryerson students receiving free admission with code RAMS and alumni receiving 50% off tickets with code RAMSALUMNI.
