Rams readying for playoff prep against Queen's

TORONTO - The newly No. 10 ranked Ryerson Rams men's volleyball team will be taking on the No. 6 Queen's Gaels this Sunday, which will be the last regular season game for both teams.

With the Gaels and Rams both guaranteed a two and three seed in the OUA East division, this weekend's game will be much more about playoff preparation and not playoff seeding.

Both teams are also on a four-game win streak, with Queen's winning 11 of their last 12, so this will be a good test for both teams as there are no easy matchups in the playoffs.

The No. 6 Gaels are a team that the Rams have struggled against in the past, losing the last six matchups against them. The Rams have also struggled against teams above .500 this season, so this will be their last shot of beating a powerhouse before the playoffs.

Rams outside hitter Greg Vukets (Auckland, New Zealand) articulated this issue well after last week's win over Nipissing, saying, "All season, we've been beating the okay-to-bad teams and struggling against the top teams, and Queen's is a top team so now is a chance to prove ourselves right before playoffs."

The Gaels are the only team to have defeated McMaster this entire season and are also coming off a 3-0 win over the Gryphons, who are the two seed in the OUA West and will most likely be the Rams first opponents in the playoffs.

Sunday's matchup will be looked at as another opportunity to build this young team's chemistry and rhythm. Team captain Navreet Suhan (Mississauga, Ont.) also stressed this after last week's game, saying, "Even that game where it was 3-0 (Rams last game against Queen's), we always felt like we were right there. I think it just went down to chemistry, those boys have been playing together for a while now, and we're a young team with new additions like Taryq Sani (Scarborough, Ont.) so we're just trying to get to that level going into the playoffs."

As the Rams rank in the top seven of every statistical category in the OUA, they will be looking to improve on things that do not show up on the stat sheet, such as chemistry, winning crucial points and managing the momentum of other teams.

Ryerson has finished the regular season with a 12-6 record for the last three years and will be looking to make that four as they currently sit with an 11-6 record.

Sunday's first serve will be at 4:00 p.m. from Ryerson's Coca-Cola Court and will also be available to stream on OUA.tv.
