GUELPH, Ont. — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's volleyball team showed resilience on the road Friday night but ultimately fell 3-1 (25-11, 25-19, 17-25, 25-23) to the Guelph Gryphons at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.
Day Westell led TMU with 13.5 points, recording seven kills on a .545 hitting percentage while contributing five block assists.
William Gimbert paced the Bold with a team-high 12 kills, while
Riley Donovan added nine points and eight kills. Setter
Declan Dunn orchestrated the offence with 27 assists.
The Bold also saw the return of
Gavin Elzinga, who made his first appearance of 2026. Elzinga provided an added option offensively and contributed key points off the bench as TMU pushed momentum in the middle of the match.
After a difficult opening set in which TMU struggled to establish its offence, the Bold began to settle into the match in the second frame, trading points with the Gryphons through the early stages. Despite generating more pressure at the net, TMU was unable to close the gap late as Guelph took a 2-0 lead.
The Bold responded with their strongest stretch of volleyball in the third set. TMU found rhythm offensively, hitting .429 in the frame. A balanced attack and consistent pressure allowed the Bold to pull away and take the set 25-17, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The fourth set was tightly contested throughout, with TMU going point-for-point and pushing the Gryphons deep into the frame. The Bold remained composed under pressure and generated key late points, but a narrow margin proved decisive as Guelph edged out a 25-23 win to close the match.
The Bold and Gryphons will meet again on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 6 p.m., with the match available to watch on OUA.tv.
