TORONTO – After two decorated seasons as a Ram, men's volleyball player
Xander Ketrzynski has signed his first professional contract and will be heading overseas to begin his career with Al Sadd volleyball club.
In his two years at Ryerson, Ketrzynski racked up the accolades, earning the U SPORTS Rookie of the Year, OUA Most Valuable Player, and two First-Team All-Canadian awards.
Throughout his career, the 6-8 outside hitter averaged 5.6 points per set and accumulated 727.5 total points to his name. His production vaulted him up the Rams record books where he sits seventh all-time in points, despite playing just two seasons.Â
"Ryerson helped me get to this point because I had the opportunity to develop and play for coaches that challenged me every day and coached me not only to succeed at the U SPORTS level, but internationally as well," said Ketrzynski.
During his time at Ryerson, Ketrzynski represented Canada on the junior national team. Most recently, Ketrzynski was training at the Volleyball Canada National Excellence Program in Gatineau, Que.
"This opportunity (with Al Sadd) is a chance to experience pro volleyball for the first time. Though I have already played a few international tournaments, this is the first time I'll be living outside Canada and competing against seasoned pros," added Ketrzynski.
The Qatar Volleyball Association has started its season, with Al Sadd having played two games to this point. Ketrzynski will be heading to his new club on Friday, November 13.
"We are so happy and proud of Xander to continue on his next journey in life," said Rams head coach, Matt Harris. "He has had a tremendous impact on our Ryerson community, athletics department, and volleyball program. Over his years here, Xander established himself as a top player in North America. The team that Xander is going to is very fortunate – not only have they got a top level talent, but someone of high character and also a great teammate. We will miss Xander and want to thank him for everything he has done for the Ryerson men's volleyball team."
"I'd like to say thanks to all the staff, my teammates, and coaches at Ryerson for making my years as a Ram so memorable," said Ketrzynski. "The thing that I'll remember the most (about Ryerson) is the excitement of walking onto the court every day, whether it was a game or practice, and competing for the love of the sport."
The Rams extend congratulations to Ketrzynski and wish him the best of luck in his career.
