TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams took their homecoming game 4-1 on Friday night over the Queen's Gaels. The Rams won in style wearing their new golden uniforms inside a packed Mattamy Athletic Centre.
The Ramily was electric in the stands as Ryerson took the ice aggressively. The physical play forced some penalties throughout the first period.
The puck went back and forth, with both squads earning chances. Rams goalie
Taylor Dupuis (New Liskeard, Ont.) kept Ryerson in the game with some big saves, including a sprawling stop while down two men.
Neither team had capitalized on the man advantage when some speed up the ice drew a hooking call against Queen's late in the first. With 25 seconds left in the period, a
Cavin Leth (Taber, Alta.) snapshot from the faceoff circle beat the glove side to put the Rams up 1-0.
Dupuis continued his clutch saves throughout the second. There was a lull in the action around the middle of the second period as passes became sloppy. Later on, the Rams applied some pressure, drawing a checking from behind call which cost the Gaels a minor and a game misconduct for Alexander Row (Mallorytown, Ont.). The Rams power play made them pay as
Hayden McCool (Whitby, Ont.) finished off a one-timer on a pass from Mat Santos (Toronto, Ont.).
Queen's cut into the Rams' 2-0 lead at the end of the second when a scramble in the crease found Matthew Hotchkiss (Courtice, Ont.). The stage was set for the third with the Rams up 2-1.
Early on,
Jared Walsh (Toronto, Ont.) made a speedy rush up the ice, causing a big rebound that got cashed in by
Patrick Fellows (Mississauga, Ont.) to make it 3-1.
Mat Santos capped off the game with a laser of a slapshot on yet another power play making it 4-1. The Rams were able to hold off the Gaels for the remaining six minutes and took the game.
Head coach
Johnny Duco said "whether there's ten people or two thousand we want to play and stick to our game," in regards to the loud crowd of 2,450 Ryerson fans. "Any time you're playing in front of that many fans it's loud and it's a great atmosphere, it's a lot of fun."
Goalie
Taylor Dupuis, who kept the Rams in it all game, said, "I think tonight was more about Ryerson as a whole. Not just our hockey team, not just athletics but Ryerson coming together. I hope (the fans) had just as much fun as us. That was special to be a part of."
The Rams play another exhibition match Saturday against Ontario Tech. Their regular season kicks off on Thursday, October 10th against the Guelph Gryphons on home ice.
