Rams outlast Nipissing in shootout for third win in a row

NORTH BAY, Ont. - In another low-scoring yet dominant offensive performance, Ryerson poured 38 shots on goal and beat the Nipissing Lakers 3-2 in a shootout on Wednesday night.

Four Ryerson skaters were playing on familiar ice in North Bay. Steven Harland (Toronto), Mark Shoemaker (Mississauga, Ont.), Zach Shankar (Prescott, Ont.), and Mathew Santos (Toronto) all spent time with the North Bay Battalion in the Ontario Hockey League before suiting up for the Rams.

Hayden McCool (Whitby, Ont.) and Shankar's goals in the first period served as the only Ryerson tallies in regulation. Santos' nifty move in the shootout led to the only goal, and winner, for Ryerson. Garrett Forrest (Ashburn, Va.) also picked up the 28-save win. Despite their chances and relatively sound defensive play, the Rams failed to capitalize on the powerplay, going 0-for-5.

The Rams were on cruise control in the first. They outshot the Lakers 11-6 and did not squander their chances. Forrest was called upon to stop a breakaway and help kill three powerplays in the first 20 minutes.

Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont.) seemingly gave the Rams the lead ten minutes in, but it was called off due to goalie interference. The captain was given a 10-minute misconduct for unsportsmanlike conduct after the play, but remained in the game.

Hayden McCool's fourth of the season put the Rams up 1-0 off a smooth pass from Harland. Less than a minute later, Shankar's point shot off the faceoff flew by a screened Talor Joseph for his second of the season. Thus, despite 16 penalty minutes in the first, Ryerson entered intermission up 2-0.

The second was a much quieter period, although the penalty minutes continued to add up. Both teams went 0-for-4 throughout 40 minutes. Ryerson continued to outshoot the Lakers 20-16, but a rush by Nipissing's Kyle Lewis late in the period made it 2-1.

After both goalies stood on their heads in the third, Nipissing finally managed to tie things up at 2-2. Deverick Ottereyes' fifth of the season with just over five minutes to go was enough to send this match to overtime. Forrest made another breakaway stop early in extra time to keep Ryerson alive. Despite a 4-on-3 powerplay in sudden-death, Ryerson could not find a goal.

The shootout took only three rounds to find a decision. Forrest stopped all of the Lakers' attempts and Santos' forehand-backhand move was enough to beat Nipissing's Talor Joseph.

With their win in North Bay, Ryerson has picked up three victories in a row. The squad will look to continue their winning ways in Kingston on Saturday against the Queen's Gaels at 7:30 p.m.
