Rams pepper Laurentian to come away with close win

TORONTO - After nearly doubling Laurentian's shot totals with 39, the Rams secured a close 2-1 victory over the Voyageurs on Friday night on Mattamy Home Ice.

Holden Cook (Whitby, Ont.) made a huge individual effort to slot in the game winning goal. Captain Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont.) also found the scoresheet on a powerplay goal.

Action went back and forth as soon as the puck was dropped. Garrett Forrest (Ashburn, Va.) challenged every Laurentian shooter, making eight stops in the first period. On a late powerplay, the Voyageurs left the dangerous Mistele with time and space, who buried it five-hole for his third of the season.

Ryerson's 1-0 lead was tested early in the second on a Laurentian powerplay. However, things were evened up on an interference call just twenty seconds into their man-advantage.

A strong stick by Jared Walsh (Toronto) halted a breakaway chance for the Voyageurs halfway into the second. Two minutes later, a speeding Holden Cook went coast-to-coast before firing one top shelf over Mackenzie Savard's glove to make it 2-0. The Rams' momentum was clear ending the second, outshooting Laurentian 21-14.

Halfway into the third, Laurentian cut the Rams' lead to one when Zach Wilkie got one by a screened Forrest. Despite an empty net late in the game, the final whistle blew and the final score read 2-1 for Ryerson.

"I don't think it was our best 60 (minutes) but we played really well defensively," commented coach Kori Cheverie after the game. "I think it's another building block in the right direction."

Game-winning goal scorer Holden Cook downplayed his highlight reel goal. "I got a good bounce." Cook now has three goals on the season. "I got lucky enough to put it over the guy's shoulder."

Cook also said "It becomes a routine, so it's not too bad," when asked about fatigue for Ryerson's match tomorrow night against the RMC Paladins. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. at home and Ryerson students are free with their OneCard.
