Offence comes alive in Battle of Toronto win

TORONTO - The Rams' offence pelted 34 shots against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday night to come away with a commanding 6-3 victory.

Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont.) paved the way for Ryerson with three points, and Mathew Santos (Toronto) netted the game winner. Garrett Forrest (Ashburn, Va.) made 26 stops for the win.

In the first, action went back and forth. Both teams traded chances, with few whistles in the first half of the period. Patrick Fellows (Mississauga, Ont.) had the biggest chance, knocking one off the crossbar with about ten minutes to go.

Two minutes later, Aaron Hyman's (Calgary, Alta.) quick shot from the point was redirected home by Captain Mistele for his first tally of the season.

Toronto answered back on a powerplay, when Kyle Potts tapped in a rebound. Things were knotted up at one entering intermission.

The second period heated up as soon as the puck was dropped. A hooking call gave Ryerson's powerplay a chance to kick-start after a lackluster 0-6 outing on Thursday. Holden Cook (Whitby, Ont.) gave the unit just what they needed when he roofed a backhand rebound for his first goal as a Ram.

A few minutes later, Cook found a bolting Zachary Shankar (Prescott, Ont.) as he stepped out of the penalty box. A nifty backhand-forehand move finished off the breakaway, making it 3-1 for the Rams.

When Ryerson's offence dialed back, Toronto managed to put up two quick ones. Hunter Atchinson and Nathan Hudgin brought the game back to a draw.

The game sat at 3-3, with four goals scored within the first eight minutes of the second period. Things quieted down during the rest of the second, and the stage was set for the third.

With less than ten to go, the teams found themselves playing 4-on-4. Using his speed and a quick pass from Mistele, Santos split the Toronto defencemen and buried it on his forehand, putting the Rams up 4-3.

Santos then returned the favour, dishing it out from behind the net to Mistele for an insurance marker with just over five minutes remaining. An empty-netter from Devon Paliani (LaSalle, Ont.) sealed the deal for tonight's Battle of Toronto.

Rams head coach Johnny Duco said, "We knew they (Toronto) would come out, it was going to be a tough game." The Rams improve to 1-1-0 on the season after a rocky 5-2 loss to the Guelph Gryphons in their home opener on Thursday. "You're in a 3-3 hockey game in the third and the guys stuck with it and I thought we did a really good job pulling that one out."

Game-winning goal scorer Mathew Santos said, "That's all we got to keep doing. Just put our head down, go to work, put the work boots on, and do the job we have to do." The Rams have their work cut out for them the rest of the season, and go on their first road trip next week.

The Rams are back in action in Guelph on Wednesday in a rematch of their home opener, at 7:30 p.m. ET.
