Rams fail to keep up with Gryphons

GUELPH, Ont. - The Rams got an unlucky start to their road trip on Wednesday night with a 6-3 loss to the Guelph Gryphons.

Ryerson looked promising to start the game, but ultimately lagged behind Guelph after sacrificing five goals in the first period.

Garrett Forrest (Ashburn, Va.) got his second start in a row. Thursday was a tough night on goalies, with both teams putting more than 30 shots on net.

David Miller's (Burlington, Ont.) nifty move on a pass from Devon Paliani (LaSalle, Ont.) made it 1-0 just four minutes into the opening frame.

Guelph's Mikkel Aagaard got it back, but Cavin Leth's (Taber, Alta.) first of the season put the Rams in front again at 2-1.

After some sloppy defence, the Gryphons put up four unanswered goals, including a powerplay marker. Forrest was temporarily pulled after his fourth goal against and replaced with Troy Timpano (Pickering, Ont.).

Holden Cook (Whitby, Ont.) found a rebound on the doorstep with three minutes to go in the frame to cut Ryerson's deficit to two goals. The whirlwind first period ended with the Rams down 5-3.

In the second, Forrest was back between the pipes. Coach Johnny Duco's goalie juggling paid off as Forrest kept the Rams in the game with some key stops.

The second frame was the complete opposite of the high-scoring first period. Both teams had chances, but defensive play was much tighter. After 40 minutes, the score remained 5-3 for Guelph with the Rams outshooting the Gryphons 22-21.

In the third, Ryerson's powerplay struggles proved costly. A lengthy two-man advantage failed to provide a much needed goal. Cook's lone tally in the first was the only powerplay goal the squad could muster, going 1-for-6 on the night.

Forrest made a huge stop on a 3-on-1 later on, but a quick snipe on another odd-man rush by Mikkel Aagaard gave Guelph a 6-3 lead at the end of the game.

The Rams will look to tighten up their early game defence and powerplay efficiency when they head to face the York Lions on Friday. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
