OTTAWA — Powered by a dominant performance from
Sydney Pyburn, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team earned a 2-0 road victory over the Carleton Ravens on Friday night.
Pyburn stopped all 28 shots, earning her second career OUA shutout. The hard-fought win over the Ravens also snapped TMU's four-game losing streak.
The penalty-filled game began early in the first, when Carleton was called for body checking. Although they had the advantage, TMU was unable to capitalize and soon found themselves on the other side due to a cross-checking call. With several key saves from Pyburn, the period ended with no score.
The second period was much of the same, with the advantage first going to Carleton, then flipping to a four-on-four match due to a head contact call. As both teams returned to full strength, Carleton took control offensively throughout the second frame, outshooting TMU 13-7.
Despite their offensive pressure, the Ravens were no match for Pyburn's quick reflexes. Heading into the second intermission, she kept the score tied at zero thanks to some last-minute moves and deflections.
With the third period beginning, both teams were hungry to break the ice and score the potential game-winning goal. Just 28 seconds into the frame,
Neely Van Volsen stunned Ravens with some quick thinking. After the puck rebounded from the boards, Van Volsen swiftly grabbed it and poked it past Carleton's goalie to find the back of the net, shocking the netminder in the process.
Van Volsen's sharp moves were everything the Bold needed to establish a much-needed presence late into the game. Only minutes later, at 02:49,
Gaby Gareau finished a slick move on the Ravens' netminder after a pass from
Britni Yammine, extending TMU's lead to 2-0.
The penalties continued throughout the third, with another advantage for the Ravens coming shortly after TMU scored their second goal. In the final seconds of Carleton's power play, the Ravens were called for interference, creating another four-on-four matchup.
As they closed out the game, both teams showed some physicality. TMU's special teams were dominant, going 7-for-7on the penalty kill and helping to secure the 2-0 win.
The Bold continue their road trip tomorrow as they face the Ottawa Gee-Gees at 3 p.m. Fans can watch the game on OUA.tv.
