Bold Fall to Ottawa

OTTAWA — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team closed out their road trip with a 3-0 loss against the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday afternoon.

Looking to build off their win over Carleton on Friday,  the Bold started strong in the first period, gaining possession on the opening faceoff and racing down the ice. Perhaps a little too eager, TMU was called for cross-checking just three minutes into the frame.

TMU's special teams were solid, applying pressure to the Gee-Gees to keep them from getting too close to their crease. Alizee LeBlanc used the boards to her advantage, blocking two Ottawa forwards as she cleared the puck and successfully killed the power play.

Continuing her hot streak from last night, Sydney Pyburn was lights out in the first, making several deflections and key saves throughout the period to keep the score tied at 0.

Early in the second, both teams traded possession. With both teams hungry to score the opening goal, the Gee-Gees turned on the jets and began to swarm TMU's offensive zone. Although the Gee-Gees were persistent, they were no match for Pyburn, who once again made several incredible saves

As the period progressed, the Bold found themselves under even more pressure as they were called for hooking. One minute into the advantage for Ottawa, the Gee-Gees were able to sneak one past Pyburn, breaking the ice.

That shift in momentum was all Ottawa needed to get the ball rolling, outshooting the Bold 15-5 during the frame. With a goalie interference call late into the second, the Bold had a chance to even the score, but couldn't capitalize, and ended the period down 1-0.

The third period began with the Bold itching  to even the score. Unfortunately, the Gee-Gees had gotten the taste of victory and ran with it. Amplifying their pressure in TMU's offensive zone, Ottawa caught Pyburn off guard with an attempt, then scored with a backhand rebound to double their lead.

Three minutes later, the Bold were called for roughing, giving the Gee-Gees a chance to further extend their lead. With the help of TMU's special teams, who killed four of five penalties., Ottawa was unable to capitalize.

After swapping penalties late into the period, TMU pulled Pyburn to give them an extra attacker. Minutes before the final buzzer, Ottawa notched an empty net goal, resulting in a 3-0 TMU loss.
The Bold are back home next week as they face the Carleton Ravens on Feb. 13 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:15 p.m., and students can get in for free with their OneCard.
