TORONTO — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team fell 3-2 to the Brock Badgers in game 2 of the OUA quarterfinal series.
The Bold were outshot early in the opening frame as the Badgers came out with pressure, but TMU held firm—thanks in large part to goaltender
Kai Edmonds. A scramble in front of the net led to a scuffle, setting the tone for what would be a physical matchup.
Despite trailing in shots, the Bold generated quality chances.
Daniil Grigorev tested Brock from the slot, while
Aleks Dimovski nearly opened the scoring with a wraparound attempt. TMU eventually broke through when
Connor Bowie found the back of the net.
Skating down the right side into the offensive zone, Bowie received a pass from
Marko Djordjevic and, with a clear lane to the net, beat Brock goaltender Ben Bonisteel five-hole.
TMU carried a 1-0 lead out of the first period, despite trailing Brock 11-9 in shots.
The Bold opened the second period on the penalty kill following a boarding call in the final second of the first period. Brock generated chances, but TMU successfully held down the fort, killing off the penalty.
Seven minutes into the second frame, the Bold went to the power play and capitalized. Grigorev—assisted by
Joseph Ianniello—fired a shot from the top of the circle through traffic and past Bonisteel to extend the lead.
The Badgers responded shortly after on a delayed penalty against the Bold, cutting the deficit to one.
A close look from
Will Portokalis marked TMU's final major chance to extend the lead before the period ended. The Bold headed into the second intermission up 2-1, trailing Brock 22-21 in shots.
Midway through the third period, TMU continued to protect its one-goal lead. However, in the final 10 minutes, the Badgers scored twice to take control of the game.
In a final push to force overtime, Edmonds was pulled for the extra attacker, but the Bold were unable to find the equalizer, falling 3-2, despite leading in shots 32-31.
Up next, the Bold will return to home ice to face the Badgers in game three of the best-of-three quarterfinal series on Sunday, March 1. Puck drop is set for 6:15 p.m., and students can attend for free with their OneCard.
