TORONTO — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team rallied from behind to earn a 3-2 victory over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity Arena on Friday night.
Twice, the Bold fell behind, and both times they responded with timely tying goals before ultimately taking the lead for good in the third period. With the win, TMU secures the season series against the Varsity Blues, having split their previous two meetings this year.
Toronto struck first just three minutes into the opening period, but the Bold answered quickly. Joseph Ianniello blasted a slapshot from the right side past Toronto netminder Nick Surzycia, knotting the score at 1-1. The first period ended evenly, with both teams engaging in a physical, chippy battle.
The Varsity Blues regained the lead less than a minute into the second period, but TMU once again showed resilience. Marko Djordjevic, who had scored twice in the Bold's 2-1 overtime victory over Wilfrid Laurier the previous night, continued his hot streak, tapping in his team-leading 12th goal of the season off assists from Jack Budd and Connor Bowie. The teams entered the third period tied 2-2.
In the final frame, the Bold took control. Gavin Grundner scored from the point to give TMU their first lead of the night, and that proved to be the game-winner. Goaltender Kai Edmonds stopped 34 of 36 shots to secure the win.
The victory improves TMU's record to 15-7 and puts them alone in first place in the OUA West. The Bold will next face the Waterloo Warriors on the road at Columbia Ice Field on Friday, Jan. 30, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be streamed on OUA.tv.
