WINDSOR, Ont. — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers 4-1 in a scrappy road contest.
Coming off a loss that snapped their seven-game winning streak, the Bold quickly bounced back, continuing a trend they've maintained all season: winning on the road.
TMU generated early pressure in the first period, creating several chances around the net from both
Joseph Ianniello and
Slava Melikov. Despite earning their first power play, the Bold were unable to convert.
Physicality defined much of the opening frame. Emotions boiled over on both sides, and what could have been another power play opportunity for TMU disappeared after a penalty was called following a scuffle caused by a shot after the whistle.
Penalties on
Connor Bowie and
Jack Budd left TMU down two men. Windsor capitalized on the advantage when Keegan McMullen fired a shot past goaltender
Kai Edmonds to take the lead.
The Bold responded. After killing the remaining penalty time,
Marko Djordjevic carried the puck down the right wing and snapped a shot that slipped in and out of Lancers' netminder Max Donoso's glove before bouncing into the net.
The first period ended tied at 1-1.
The second period saw both teams trading high-intensity chances as they battled for control. At the halfway mark, the Lancers applied pressure on Edmonds, but he stood tall. TMU's best chance came on a one-on-one rush from Gavin Grunder, but Donoso made the save.
In the period's lone penalty, the Bold killed off the Lancers' power play and even generated a shorthanded opportunity from
Will Portokalis.
The middle frame ended with the score still deadlocked at 1-1.
The Bold broke through in the final period.
On another shorthanded rush, Djordjevic took a shot that rebounded off Donoso. Portokalis swooped in and buried the puck, giving TMU their first lead of the night.
Ten minutes later, the Bold widened the lead when
Brock McLeod fired a shot from the slot—assisted by
Carter MacAdams and
Hunter Donohoe—making it 3-1.
The Lancers pulled their goaltender, but the Bold shut the door. Portokalis sealed the win with an empty-net goal, marking his second of the night.
TMU came out victorious, winning 4-1.
Up next, the Bold will continue their road trip against the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, Jan. 17. Fans can watch the game on OUA.tv.
