GUELPH, Ont. — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team fell 5-2 to the Guelph Gryphons to close out their road trip.
The Bold started fast in the first period, quickly gaining possession off the opening face-off, but the Gryphons matched the pace in the early going, making it a back-and-forth game.
Midway through the frame, the Bold were called for holding, giving the Gryphons their first power-play opportunity. Guelph capitalized, scoring the opening goal of the game.
Down one, TMU earned their second power play of the period. Will Portokalis and Joseph Ianniello generated chances, but were unable to convert. The period ended with the Bold trailing by one and being outshot 7-3.
Early in the middle period, TMU evened the score as the defensive duo of Joseph Ianniello and Hunter Donohoe struck. Ianniello fed Donohoe, who sent the puck past Olivier Ciarlo to tie the game.
TMU struck again later in the period, this time on the power play. Gavin Grundner sent a pass up to the slot from behind the goal line to Connor Bowie, who fired the puck into the back of the net to give the Bold their first lead of the game.
The Gryphons responded just under two minutes later to bring the game back to an even score. Guelph then added two more goals, 30 seconds apart, and the period ended with the Bold down 4-2.
In the final frame, the Bold battled to regain momentum but were unable to close the gap, falling 5-2 to the Gryphons.
Up next, the Bold return home to face the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 6:15 p.m. Students can attend for free with their OneCard.
