The 2024 fall season was an exhilarating period for members of Toronto Metropolitan University's (TMU) Bold cross-country team. The fall period saw the team attend three races, each providing athletes with valuable experience and confidence-building opportunities.
Preparing for the fall season, the team started training at the beginning of September. This approximately one-month-long training period was a fantastic opportunity for the athletes to assess each other's strengths and key areas for development before the first race.
The season kicked off with the 27th annual Don Mills Open, hosted by the Waterloo Warriors. This race saw athletes traverse through the disc golf course on the University of Waterloo's campus. The six-kilometer course provided a fantastic start to the season, which began on Saturday, September 28, with its shorter length allowing runners to ease into competition mode and build early-season confidence. Starting on the women's side,
Meghan Muldoon led the team with a time of 24:32, coming in 54th place.
Kate Brock followed up in 81st place, with
Holly Pedlow rounding off the team, coming in 94th. For the men,
Jack Heintz came in 83rd place, with a time of 20:57.
Tom Voss and
Fawwaz Khan both put in good efforts to finish off the top three Bold runners, placing 94th and 102nd, respectively.Â
Next up was the 8-Kay Marauder Invitational, hosted by the McMaster Marauders at Kay Drage Park on October 11. The eight-kilometer mainly was flat but stood out because of its several twists and turns, along with hay bales in the path of runners, forcing athletes to jump over them to complete the course. With four loops, each two kilometers long, the course became a bit of a head spin for the runners, making a few of them a bit dizzy. Additionally, a strong headwind on the back straight made this a real test of endurance. On the men's side,
Jack Heintz, Massimo Montanarri, and
Fawwaz Khan took the top three placements for TMU – placing 114th, 135th, and 142nd, respectively. On the women's side,
Meghan Muldoon kept a great pace, coming in at 59th, with
Kate Brock beating out the strong headwind to take home 121st for TMU.
To wrap up the season, the Bold team had its final race at the 2024 OUA Cross Country Championships at Osprey Links Golf Course in North Bay on October 26. Hosted by the Nipissing Lakers, this eight-kilometer course wound its way through several steep climbs, with each part of the trail lined with vibrant and colorful autumn trees to help take the runners' minds off the inclines. Taking on the hills with determination,
Meghan Muldoon finished at the top of the women's team, coming in 56th with a time of 32:29.
Kate Brock put in a respectable effort, maintaining a solid pace to finish 85th with a time of 34:40.
Jack Heintz led the men's team, finishing off the last race with a time of 28:20 and placing 79th.
Fawwaz Khan and
Tom Voss both put in a great effort, finishing back-to-back, with Fawwaz coming in at 91st, with a time of 29:39, and Tom coming in at 92nd, with a time of 29:51.
Ultimately, the 2024 season laid a solid foundation for the team's future. Most of the runners are expected to return for the 2025 season, and new runners are anticipated to join. It was the first season for new head coach Charles Minor, and he will continue to work closely with the athletes moving forward, serving as an integral asset in improving the team's dynamics, strength, and performance.
