OTTAWA – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team fell 4-3 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the U SPORTS University Cup semifinal on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Bold will compete for bronze on Sunday, March 23, at 11 a.m.
The game featured four lead changes, culminating in Ottawa's game-winner at 19:18 of the third period. Jordan D'Intino, Ian Martin, and Tyler Savard scored for TMU, while Jaden Condotta recorded two assists and was named the team's Player of the Game.
Despite coming off a five-overtime victory—the longest game in U SPORTS history—the Bold showed few signs of fatigue. After trailing 1-0 in the first, they responded with two second-period goals. D'Intino tied the game at 11:52, assisted by Joseph Ianniello and Condotta, before Martin put TMU ahead less than two minutes later, with Evan Brand and Chris Playfair picking up assists. Ottawa quickly answered, equalizing a minute later and then regaining the lead in the final minute of the period to lead 3-2 after two.
TMU controlled the third, keeping the play in Ottawa's defensive zone. The Bold's persistence paid off when Savard tied the game at 14:46, with Kevin Gursoy and Condotta registering assists. Both teams pressed for the winner but it was Ottawa who found the net in the final minute, sending the home crowd at TD Place into a frenzy.
The Bold outshot Ottawa 33-29 and Kai Edmonds made 25 saves.
In the bronze-medal matchup, TMU will face the loser of the Concordia-Saskatchewan semifinal. Fans can watch the bronze medal game live on CBC Gem and YouTube.
