OTTAWA – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team fell 4-1 to the Saskatchewan Huskies in the U SPORTS national bronze medal game on Sunday at the arena at TD Place, finishing fourth in the country for the third time in four years.
Kai Edmonds made 20 saves and was named TMU's Player of the Game, while
Kevin Gursoy scored the team's lone goal on the power play at 17:06 of the second period, assisted by
Joseph Ianniello and
Connor Bowie.
The game was highly physical, with both teams combining for 85 penalty minutes and five game misconducts. TMU came close to killing off a rare nine-minute Saskatchewan power play, which included a two-minute five on three, in the second period, but ultimately could not achieve the feat.
The 4-1 score did not reflect the tight nature of the game, as the Huskies scored two of their four goals in the final three minutes. After a scoreless first period, Saskatchewan edged TMU 2-1 in the second before adding two late goals in the third, including an empty-netter to seal the win.
Despite the loss, the Bold remain in the midst of a successful stretch, having qualified for three U SPORTS National Championships in the past four seasons and making two appearances in the OUA Queen's Cup Championship game. Their focus now shifts to building on that momentum next season.
