OTTAWA – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team made history on Thursday at the U SPORTS University Cup, defeating the Mount Royal Cougars 5-4 in the fifth overtime in the longest game in U SPORTS men's hockey history.
Spencer Shugrue sealed the victory after two hours and 23 minutes, poking home the game-winner to send the Bold to the semifinals, where they will face the winner of Ottawa versus UNB. This marked the first-ever U SPORTS game to reach five overtimes, surpassing the previous record set in 2011 when UNB defeated Acadia in the fourth overtime of an AUS semifinal.
Kai Edmonds was named the Player of the Game after making 65 saves in the victory. Five different TMU players found the back of the net:
Jaden Condotta,
Kevin Gursoy,
Ian Martin,
Daniil Grigorev, and Shugrue.
Condotta opened the scoring for TMU in the first period, tying the game 1-1 off an assist from
Jordan D'Intino. That remained the Bold's lone goal of the period as both teams entered the first intermission deadlocked.
Mount Royal surged ahead in the second, scoring three times in quick succession to take what appeared to be a 4-1 lead. However, the Cougars' fourth goal was overturned after a video review confirmed offside. Trailing 3-1, the Bold responded late in the period when Gursoy converted off assists from
Connor Bowie and
Evan Brand, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
The Cougars restored their two-goal advantage early in the third, scoring just 1:01 into the frame. But the Bold refused to back down. Martin capitalized off assists from
Joseph Ianniello and Bowie to bring TMU within one. Then, Grigorev tied the game at 4-4 on a counter attack, moments after a clutch save by Edmonds and a quick outlet pass from Ianniello.
From there, the teams played the equivalent of an entire game—plus another full period—without scoring. Despite several chances, neither side could break the deadlock through the first, second, third, or fourth overtime. Finally, in the fifth extra frame, Shugrue battled in front of the net, found a loose puck, and buried it—sending the Bold into jubilation.
TMU will face the winner of No. 1 seed UNB vs. No. 8 seed Ottawa on Saturday, March 22, at 1 p.m. Watch the contest on
