TORONTO – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team blew out the No. 9-ranked and top seed in the OUA East, the Nipissing Lakers, 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Bold wore purple and played in honour of the Do It For Daron cause.Â
Mia Morano played a huge role in planning the event and also made her mark on the ice.Â
"This is my fifth year that we have been doing this fundraiser," said Morano. "It's really important, as a student-athlete, to be able to focus on your mental health and juggle athletics at the same time."
In the game, the Bold were led by a couple of standout performances–
Alexia Stratos recorded 39 saves and
Megan Breen tallied four points.
The Bold received a few powerplays in the first period that generated some chances in front but they could not get past the Lakers goalie.
The Lakers came in on a 2-1 late in the first and secured the game's first goal to take a 1-0 advantage into the first period.
"We had a game plan going into the game, and we missed the boat on it a lot. The first period, I didn't think it was awful, but it certainly wasn't good enough and in the second I think we just reinforced what success looks like for us," said Bold Head Coach
Lisa Haley.
In the second period, the Lakers went on the attack, keeping the puck in the Bold zone, but Stratos refused to be beaten.
Early in the period, the Bold received another powerplay where
Megan Breen fired the puck into the net to tie up the game.
Payton Kerr shot the puck from the side of the net and landed the go-ahead goal for the Bold. The Bold headed into the second intermission up by one.
Despite the Bold being in the lead, the Lakers did back down, and had more shots on goal throughout the entirety of the game.
During an early powerplay in the third, Breen secured her second of the game, putting the Bold up by two.Â
"It feels great. I don't think my goals would have gone in if it weren't for the rest of the team doing what they were doing," said Breen.
The Bold held on for the rest of the period, and
Mia Morano who was a powerhouse all over the ice, scored an empty netter to make this a 4-1 game.
On the heels of the big win, the Bold will head back on the road to face the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Feb 7. Â Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. and can be streamed on OUA.tv.
