TORONTO —The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team, led by a hat trick from
Daniil Grigorev, bested the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday night 8-2.
The first period was busy for the Bold, as
Jackson Doherty opened the scoring a few minutes into the game. Grigorev quickly followed with a snipe to the back of the net seconds after.
Grigorev added to his goal not too long after, forcing the Golden Hawks to change goaltenders.
The Golden Hawks fired back and were on the board but it wasn't nearly enough to stop the Bold from rolling past them.
Will Portokalis and
Ian Martin came in hot and scored the fourth goal before heading into the intermission.
In the second period, the Golden Hawks were unable to keep the Bold out of their zone, as
Spencer Shugrue secured the fifth of the game and his third of the season.
Grigorev scored his third goal of the game to secure his second career hat-trick. "Thank you to my linemates and all my team," said Grigorev.
Before heading into the third period, tensions had risen between these two teams. Right away, both teams traded penalties back and forth, getting very chippy.
The Golden Hawks managed to score for the last time, but the Bold were not done yet.
Aleks Dimovski dangled into the Golden Hawks zone and recorded the seventh goal of the game.
After many more arguments, Captain
Chris Playfair knew that the aggressiveness on both teams would continue to rise.
"As a captain, you try to keep the boys as level-headed as you can. Emotions are gonna rise in games like that at the end of the day, like we're gonna always protect each other out there. We're gonna protect ourselves." said Playfair.
With a minute left in the game,
Jordan D'Intino sent a swift pass to
Ian Martin who netted his second of the game and brought the score to 8-2.
Head coach
Johnny Duco returned this weekend from the FISU games and was very proud of the growth this team has shown, including the coaching staff.
"We seem to be in a good place moving forward here, so I think that confidence that guys were able to gain while we were away with increased roles has helped them now kind of settle back into the roles that they have," said Duco.
For the Bold, the win was their seventh win in a row. They will head to Varsity Arena to battle the Toronto Varsity Blues on Thursday, Feb 6 at 11 a.m. The game can be streamed on OUA.tv.
