TORONTO — The No. 3 nationally ranked Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold took it back to the 2000's with their Y2K matchup against the McMaster Marauders on Wednesday night. They secured another victory on home court, 81-57, extending their winning streak to five games.Â
"We always love having a full house here, and we appreciate the support. We play hard at home to protect home court and it's great to have a good crowd," said Head Coach
Carly Clarke.Â
Myriam Kone delivered another stellar performance, recording a career-high 28 points. Forward
Jessica Keripe also had a standout game, finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds.Â
This was the second meeting between the two teams this season. The Bold opened their OUA regular season with a 70-52 win at McMaster.
Riding high off their four-game undefeated regular season, the Bold aimed to open stronger than their previous meeting, where the first quarter was much closer.Â
Keripe set the tone early with seven first-quarter points.
Catrina Garvey also contributed to these early efforts, following Keripe's energy to finish the first with nine points.Â
Rookie
Ella McDonald drained a three-pointer, and Kone attacked the paint, helping TMU take a commanding 24-10 lead after the first.Â
After the Bold's dominant first quarter, McMaster amplified their defensive efforts in the second. The Bold prioritized perimeter shooting as McMaster made it hard to drive towards the rim with their zone defence.Â
"We settled for a lot of things and weren't playing our game, our style," said Kone on the start of the second quarter. "So after that we kind of realized that we needed to play up a level."
Coach Clarke was happy with the team's reset, "When you have a hot start, I think it's easy to get a little bit complacent, and we did a good job of refocusing."
Key three-pointers from
Alex Pino and Garvey helped to maintain momentum. The Bold went into halftime up 43-31.
In the third quarter, Keripe and Kone fed off of each other's offensive energy.Â
"[Keripe] gets to the rim and then I'm going to get to the rim next," said Kone. "We feed off each other."
Coach Clarke praised Keripe's performance today : "I thought she was great, especially in the third quarter. I think she drew like three or four fouls right at the start of the quarter and defensively locked down."Â
Forward
Hailey Franco DeRyck anchored the defence, closing out the game with 14 rebounds and three blocks. The Bold widened their lead once again, entering the fourth up 69-43.
In the fourth quarter, TMU kept their composure, controlling the pace and running down the clock.
"We're pretty happy with where we're at to this point," said Carly. "Had a good fourth quarter effort today and got the result we wanted."
The Bold closed out the game with an impressive 81-57 win.Â
Next, TMU will take a short break before facing the Brock Badgers on Saturday, Nov. 8. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. All TMU students get in free with a OneCard.
