Franco DeRyck Sets TMU Rebounding Record in 70-54 Win Over Brock

TORONTO—The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's basketball team extended their undefeated season with a 70-54 triumph over the Brock University Badgers on Saturday night.

Hailey Franco DeRyck made program history, setting a new TMU record with 22 rebounds in a single game, while also contributing 14 points in a standout performance.

"What sparked my extra effort today was because Kiyara Letlow of Queen's broke the record last game for all-time rebounds in U SPORTS," said Franco DeRyck. "I was like, let me start now so I can beat it."

Earlier this season, TMU defeated the Badgers by 16 points. With various ties between the teams, it's always an intense matchup: "Every time, their gym, our gym, I think they step up to play us and we step up to play them," said Franco DeRyck.

The Bold got things rolling early with Franco DeRyck displaying her physicality, muscling her way in the paint. She finished the first quarter with six points, but this was just the beginning for the star forward.

The game started close, but the Bold's collective energy helped them build a 21-10 lead by the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Bold had a slower start. Brock began to take control of the game, eventually tying the score up at the fifth-minute mark. This score tension ignited the Bold, and they began to redeem themselves, finding momentum at the end of the second.

After initially prioritizing scoring inside the paint, the Bold made a change. Catrina Garvey and Ella McDonald drained key three-pointers, as the Bold transitioned to shooting from the perimeter instead. With additional drives from Franco DeRyck and Myriam Kone, TMU entered halftime ahead, 36-27.

In the third quarter, Kone began to get comfortable on the court, shining a lot more in her play. There were also additional efforts from Garvey on both ends. Although Brock outshot TMU by a slim margin, the Bold maintained their lead 50-42 thanks to their early cushion.

The Bold's defence shone in the fourth quarter, forcing multiple shot clock violations and maintaining control of the game.

"We're defending in front of our bench, and the bench gave us some energy there. Certainly a great way to finish the game," said Head Coach Carly Clarke, reflecting on the fourth frame.

Garvey finished with 22 points, leading the team offensively.

Coach Clarke was pleased with her performance, "I thought she was good. She scored in some different ways. She got out in transition off her defence. We found her for some open threes, and she was able to get downhill off some ball screens."

McDonald also posted a season-high of 10 points, shooting with confidence throughout the game. With the 70-54 victory, TMU maintains their perfect regular-season record.

The Bold will have a week-long break to prepare for their matchup against the York University Lions on Saturday, Nov. 15. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. All TMU students get in free with their OneCard.
