ST. CATHARINES, Ont. — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team came from behind to defeat the Brock University Badgers 5-4, extending their perfect road record to 6-0 this season.
The Bold opened the scoring in the first period. Less than three minutes in, on a delayed penalty, Mitch Lafay received a cross-ice pass from Joseph Ianniello and fired it into the top-left corner of the net. This marked Lafay's first goal of the season and his second career OUA goal.
The Badgers responded midway through the period to tie the game. Two minutes later, a penalty on Marko Djordjevic allowed Brock to take the lead, with Zach Stringer scoring on the power play. In a sense of déjà vu, a later penalty against TMU's Jaden Raad gave Stringer his second goal of the period.
The first period ended with Brock ahead 3-1, outshooting the Bold 12-7.
TMU shifted momentum in the second period, taking control of the puck and increasing offensive pressure.
Marko Djordjevic scored on a one-timer after receiving a pass from Hunter Donohoe, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Donohoe has been a key contributor this season, recording 10 assists so far, while Djordjevic, another rookie, has made an impact with two goals and three assists over the last four games.
With just over two minutes left in the second period, Aleks Dimovski — assisted by Connor Bowie — found a gap between Badgers goaltender Will Hambley and the left post, tying the game at 3-3. TMU edged Brock in shots on goal, 23-22, by the end of the period.
The Bold carried their momentum into the third.
A penalty on Brock's Ryan Thompson allowed newly returned captain Bowie to score his first goal of the season, giving TMU the lead. Later, a double-minor penalty on Evan Brand put the Bold on a four-minute penalty kill, but they successfully fended off the Badgers, limiting scoring chances and preserving their lead. Goaltender Kai Edmonds recovered from a shaky start to make key saves throughout the frame, asserting his dominance in high-pressure situations.
Bowie sealed the win with an empty-net goal, his second of the night. Since his return, he has recorded three points — two goals and one assist — marking an excellent start to his season.
Brock pulled Hambley in the closing moments but could not score the needed goals. The match ended 5-4 in favor of TMU.
The Bold return home to face the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Nov. 21 at 6:15 p.m. The game will feature a Neon Night theme, and students can attend for free with their OneCard.
