Bold Beat Thunderwolves 4-1 for Third Straight Win

TORONTO — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team defeated the Lakehead University Thunderwolves 4-1, extending their win streak to three games.

Neon night was in full effect, with fans waving glow sticks throughout the stands during the pre-game light show.

The Bold last faced the Thunderwolves two weeks ago, in a 4-3 loss at home. However, today the Bold entered with a little bit of unfinished business.

"We want to play better in this building and it doesn't really matter who we play," said Duco. "We want to focus on bringing a lot of energy and playing a full 60 minutes like we know we are capable of and I was proud of the guys."

The first period started fast on both sides. TMU struck first on the power play with just under four minutes remaining. Daniil Grigorev found Gavin Grundner along the goal line, who wrapped the puck towards the crease for Will Portokalis to jam in.

The final seconds of the frame saw Lakehead generate a late 2-on-1 chance, but the play was ruled offside.

TMU led 1-0 after the first and held a 16-6 advantage in shots.

The Bold carried their momentum into the second period, but the Thunderwolves matched the pace. A penalty shot was awarded to the Thunderwolves after a mishap on the breakaway, but TMU goaltender Kai Edmonds stayed collected in front of the net, warding off the shot.

"We needed a save, we were on the power play so I knew anytime there is a penalty shot it is a great chance for them to score so I just needed to shut the door," said Edmonds.

The Thunderwolves scored a few minutes later, tying the game, but the Bold didn't let that hold them back.

Marko Djordjevic took a solid pass from Will Portokalis, raced down the ice, and sniped  the puck into the back of the net to restore the lead.

The Bold ended the second period ahead 2-1 and up 25-13 in shots.

The Bold extended their lead early in the final frame. Two minutes in, captain Connor Bowie fired a shot on net, collected his own rebound and scored to make it 3-1. Bowie, playing his first home game of the season, has recorded five points — three goals and two assists — in three appearances since returning to the lineup.

The Bold finished things off with an empty-net goal from Portokalis, who secured his second of the night.

The Bold outshot Lakehead 38-21 and improved their home record 2-5-0, with the 4-1 win.

"This is a huge win," said Djordjevic. "We got some guys back, Grigorev and Ian Martin, guys that are veteran players and that are elite on this team. Winning this one at home just propels us."

The Bold will be back on the road to face the York Lions on Sunday, Nov. 23. Puck drop will be at 2:15 p.m and fans can watch the game on OUA.tv.
