TORONTO — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team tamed the York University Lions 6-1 in a fast-paced, high-tension matchup on Sunday afternoon.
In their final road game of the semester, the Bold maintained their perfect away record, extending their win streak to four and strengthening their position in the standings.
The first period set the tone. York came out flying, registering the first shot of the game, but TMU goaltender
Kai Edmonds was sharp early.
Moments later, a turnover by the Lions sprung
Brock McLeod, who fed it over to
Chase Lefebvre. Lefebvre carried the puck the rest of the way, finishing the play and beating York netminder Matt Tovell to put the Bold up just five minutes in.
York generated quality chances throughout the frame, but Edmonds stood tall.
"He's the backbone of our team," said head coach
Johnny Duco. "We know how good he is and he can give us a chance to win each and every night, but we've got to support him and do the things that allow him to have success in the net. You can't say enough good things about Kai."
TMU took control in the second period outshooting the Lions 22-1 and dominating possession. Their relentless pressure and speed paid off early. Off a rebound from
Gavin Grundner, amidst the scramble in front of the net
Daniil Grigorev scored and was not immediately aware that the puck went in or that he just recorded his 50th career OUA point.
York's best look came on a lone breakaway, but the shot sailed high. TMU answered with two more goals: a five hole finish from
Spencer Shugrue off a long pass from
Hunter Donohoe, followed two minutes later by
Marko Djordjevic, who buried a clean snipe during 4-on-4 play.
The middle frame ended with the Bold up 4-0.
The Bold have proven themselves to be stronger offensively compared to the start of the season. Duco spoke about the progress from then to now.
"There's been tremendous growth from this group and we talk about it all the time: no season is going to be a straight line when you have 14, 15 new players, said Duco. "It's been a chemistry lesson trying to figure out who fits with who and who goes where. We're getting to the point where we feel pretty comfortable and guys are in positions where they can succeed."
The third period opened with the Lions breaking through getting one past Edmonds. However, 12 minutes into the period the Bold restored their four goal cushion as Lefebvre scored his second goal of the game.
On a late power play, 25 seconds in,
Will Portokalis sent a cross ice pass to
Joseph Ianniello who hammered a one timer home, to make it 6-1.
"We're getting a lot of confidence," said Lefebvre.
Tensions spiked after a hit on Shugrue and chaos broke out. York was assessed five misconducts, one major penalty and two minor penalties and TMU was given three misconducts and two minor penalties.
Once the dust settled, the Bold closed out their victory and emerged on top in both the score, 6-1 and shots, 46-23.
With only two games left before the winter break, TMU is eyeing a strong finish.
"We have to close it out strong," said Djordjevic. "We can end up in first place after next weekend. It's another two big games. Like how we were here, we just have to keep going."
Up next the Bold will return home to match up against the Guelph Gryphons on Friday Nov. 28. Puck drop is at 6:15 p.m. and students can attend for free with their OneCards.
