Bold Continue Road Dominance With Win Over Lions

TORONTO — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team, adorned in golden-yellow jerseys, took to the ice against the York Lions, winning 3-2 and earning their third straight victory.

The Bold began their four-game road trip at the University of Toronto on Saturday, beating the Varsity Blues 4-1. Today's win gave the Bold even more confidence away from home ice, as they have found success on the road so far.

The first period started off a bit slow. The bold made several good tape-to-tape connections—a change from the very first regular season game, where there seemed to be a handful of loose pucks. Despite the collective synergy on the ice, TMU couldn't get one past the York goaltender.

A penalty called on the Bold's Lachlan Wells put them on their first penalty kill of the game. Head coach Johnny Duco has consistently emphasized that TMU's defensive strength comes not only from the blueline but also from the forwards, who have contributed greatly to creating a fortress in front of goaltender Kai Edmonds

A noticeable presence on the penalty kill was Spencer Shugrue, a player always willing to jump in front of a shot. Shurgrue says that mentality is just how he learned how to play.

"I think just growing up, learning how to put the team first and knowing what I have to do to help the team win, which is blocking shots," said Shugrue. "I did it in juniors and that translated here, finding a role and doing what I can to help."

The first frame ended scoreless on both ends.

Five minutes into the second period, Gavin Grundner raced down the left side of the ice into the Lions' zone in a one-on-one, with two Lions players chasing behind. They couldn't catch him, and Grudner fired the puck into the back of the net.

25 seconds later, in a sense of deja-vu, Grundner raced down the left-side again, looking to make a similar play. However this time, he found Ian Martin closing in on the right and passed the puck to him and Martin buried it.

In this game, Grundner found himself being at the right place at the right time, carrying the puck into the offensive zone and creating chances.

"That was in our game plan, to get the puck up and find speed to the middle and I got it twice there and was able to make good plays," said Grundner. "I'm playing with good linemates and made it work."

Shortly after, the York Lions responded with a goal of their own, but that didn't slow the Bold's momentum.

Joseph Ianniello netted a goal on the power play, assisted by Hunter Donohoe and Will Portokalis.

After a successful second period, the Bold entered the final frame up by two.

The third period saw the Bold's energy dip slightly, and after a penalty was called on them, the Lions capitalized on the power play.

As the clock ticked down, the Bold held on until the last moment, claiming a 3-2 victory.

The Bold won their last two games with a bit of cushion and in this game they benefited from having a two-goal lead going into the third period. In matchups like this, maintaining a two goal lead going into the last 20 minutes of game can make the difference and ensure that the opposing team has a harder time catching up.

"We want to get the lead, we want to extend the lead and we don't want to sit back and protect the lead too early," said Duco. "We want to keep pushing and keep our foot on the gas."

The Bold are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 25, where they will take on the Brock Badgers. Fans can watch the game on OUA.tv.
