TORONTO — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team won 4-1 against the University of Toronto (U of T) Varsity Blues in the first subway series and away game of the regular season.
The last time TMU faced the Varsity Blues in a meaningful contest was when the Bold claimed victory in game three of the OUA playoffs last season in their pursuit of the Queen's Cup. However, it was only a few weeks ago when the Bold won 3-1 during their homecoming game. With the recent history against U of T being in their favour, the Bold had high hopes for today's matchup.
The first period started with intensity. The Bold were looking to continue their win streak after their 4-2 win against Western. WIth a winning mindset, the first goal came from
Carter MacAdams on a breakaway. MacAdams shot the puck at U of T goaltender Nick Surzycia who almost had it, but couldn't hold on as the crowd watched the puck just cross the goal line on the inside of the left post.
The first frame saw TMU take three penalties with one being a 5-on-3, but despite being down men, the Bold held strong defensively.
"The defence played awesome," said head coach
Johnny Duco. "I think our entire defensive game, it's not always the defencemen, like
Spencer Shugrue,
Gavin Grundner, and
Will Portokalis and
Marko Djordjevic, those guys did an awesome job up front blocking shots. "
Despite outshooting the Bold in the second period, it was to no avail for the Varsity Blues as they couldn't find the back of the net.
During the middle stretch of the second period, the tables turned when TMU found themselves on the power play. Despite four power player opportunities, the Bold couldn't widen the gap. Things would change, however in the final period.
Straight off the bat, two minutes in,
Will Portokalis widened the gap for the Bold. With
Easton Kovacs rushing out of the box, he stepped out in front of a U of T player, surprising him and intercepting a pass. Racing down the ice with the puck, the Bold found themselves in an odd man rush and captured their second goal of the game.
Midway through the period there were two penalties called on the Bold seconds apart. U of T found themselves on the 5-on-3 and got their first goal of the game.
Despite the goal,
Kai Edmonds was a star this game, holding down the fort for the Bold, stopping many dangerous shots. He was a difference maker for the team and ended the night with 36 saves.Â
After the game, he talked about how he stayed calm during the penalty kill.
"For me as a goalie, it's just about focusing on one shot at a time," said Edmonds. "I can't think about it too much, I just got to stay in the moment and take every save and shot one at a time. I'm just trying to do my job."
In a quick response to the Varsity Blues' goal,
Marko Djordjevic scored his first OUA goal, and found a moment of redemption as he was the player to receive the second penalty causing the earlier 5-on-3.
"I felt great," said Djordjevic. "I took a bad penalty, but I bounced back after that and went out and scored and made it a two goal game again."
Portokalis claimed the final goal of the game, and the Bold skated away with a victory against their crosstown rivals and won their second straight game.Â
Next up, the Bold will take a trip down Line 1 to play the York University Lions on Sunday Oct. 19 at 2:15 p.m. They are finding their stride early in the season and are hoping to carry this positive momentum into the next game. Fans can watch the game on OUA.tv.
