TORONTO – The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's soccer squad took down the University of Toronto (UofT) Varsity Blues on Friday to land their first-ever win at Varsity Stadium.
Taliyah Walker and
Aalayah Lully provided the Bold with the offensive firepower to help secure the historic 2-1 victory.
Both players helped the Bold capitalize from a position that has haunted the side through the early goings of the campaign thus far, with the two scoring from set-piece situations after being held scoreless on numerous attempts last weekend as a group.
Walker was able to curl her free kick into the bottom left corner to power the Bold on top of the Varsity Blues in the 12th minute.
The group was then able to endure an onslaught of scoring chances before the halftime whistle rang out at Varsity Stadium, with defender
Emily Porteous making a diving goal-line stop to direct even greater frustration to UofT's attacking corps.
Lully was able to help seal the deal for the Bold in the 68th minute after sailing her second attempt from the penalty spot past goalkeeper Juliana Ottoni who moments earlier, made a sprawling stop to her left to deny the Bold forward.
UofT's Hannah Chown tilted the pressure onto the Bold in the 86th minute to give the contest between the two city rivals an exciting finish that ultimately ended in favour of the blue and gold.
TMU improves to 2-1 on the season and bounces back after being shut out against Queens last Saturday.
