Layne’s Hat Trick Propels Bold to Top 10 Victory

TORONTO – The Toronto Metropolitan (TMU) Bold men's soccer team got a season-defining win on Saturday afternoon, beating the No. 3-ranked Carleton Ravens, 3-0. Jevontae Layne scored a hat trick to help the No. 6-ranked Bold improve to 4-1-2 on the season.

The Bold dominated the chances early, despite being without leading scorer Chris Campoli for the third  straight match. The Bold instead relied on an offence led by Layne, Luca Di Marco, and Justin Santos.

"Choosing our front four or five, you can close your eyes and can't be wrong," said head coach Filip Prostran. "I told the guys 'next man up, this why you're a team, when a guy goes down, who's ready to step up?'"

A strong effort by Layne in the 15th minute put the Bold ahead. The third-year transfer found just enough space in the box to bury a shot underneath the Carleton keeper, after a good through-ball from Colin Gander.

Moments later, the Bold lead doubled their lead thanks to Layne's second strike of the afternoon. The goal came via a great centering pass from midfielder Aidan Hugo. Layne completed the first-half hat trick in added time, with an incredible one-man counter attack. The three-goal margin was well-deserved for the Bold, who suffocated the Carleton possession throughout the first 45 minutes of play.

"I feel like as a team we've been training hard," said Layne after the match. "My teammates trust me to put the ball in the net, so I'm happy to provide for them."

The second half saw continued dominance from the Bold. Nursing their three goal lead, the Bold were content to limit Carleton chances, preserving Dante Ferraro's third clean sheet of the season.

The Bold will return to action on October 5th, when they take on the Queen's University Gaels in Kingston, Ont. Catch all of this season's action on OUA.tv.
