Bold book ticket to division final after series sweep of Golden Hawks

WATERLOO, Ont. - The TMU Bold men's hockey team took on the Laurier Golden Hawks in the second game of the OUA West semifinal series on Golden Hawks terrain on Friday night. The blue and gold cruised to the 5-1 victory in Waterloo, scoring a trio of empty net goals in the final minutes of play.

The squad laced up their skates and headed on foreign ice to try and close out this round of playoffs, booking themselves a ticket to the OUA divisional finals.

The first period was rocky for both teams, battling hard but unable to put up a goal. The physicality began to ramp up as Liam Ross got in a skirmish with a Golden Hawks' player with both receiving a penalty.

Ready to get the show started, the Bold powered through early in the second. Carson Gallagher found the back of the net, giving the Bold a 1-0 lead in Waterloo.

The Golden Hawks were ready to bounce back, scoring an equalizer minutes after. As the game progressed, so did the tension on the ice. Players from both teams got into a few altercations.

Nearing the end of the second, TMU's newest addition, Artem Duda, scored his second playoff goal on the power play. The Bold were back to having the upper hand and would close out the second period 2-1, but there was still more hockey to be played.

Goaltender Kai Edmonds was a force on the ice. The U SPORTS All-Star team goalie made an impressive 18 saves. The Bold's defensive line was strong, blocking several Golden Hawks' advances.

A fight on the ice put Joe Rupoli and a Golden Hawks' player at 10-minute misconduct each. The game was getting more physical as the home team was visibly in distress with the Bold's growing score.

The purple and gold decided to pull their goalkeeper in the third period, giving the Bold a clear and unobstructed target.

Taking advantage of the empty net, the Bold's Cole Cameron, Cole Resnick, and Ryan Wells all seamlessly snuck the puck into the Golden Hawks goal from the other side of the rink. All three goals happened within two minutes of one another.

As the final buzzer sounded, the blue and gold celebrated their 5-1 victory on the ice, whilst the Golden Hawks were left disappointed.

Winning two back-to-back games against the Golden Hawks, the Bold now advance to the OUA divisional final. They're one step away from competing in an OUA Queen's Cup matchup.

The date and time of the conference finals has yet to be announced. The Bold are expected to take on either the top-seeded Brock Badgers or the No. 4 seed Windsor Lancers. As of Friday night, the Badgers lead the series 1-0 over the Lancers.
